First Attempt at Growing. Critiques Appreciated
    #26814692 - 07/10/20 09:32 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hello,

As my title implies, I've never grown any shrooms before.  I'm doing the PF Tek in a SGFC. The cakes seem to have grown really well, I let them consolidate for about a week and yesterday after a 24 hour soak I rolled them in course vermiculite and set them in the chamber.

I read somewhere on here that the verm will fall off if you spray it directly within the first day or two and that seemed to be the case when I gave them a couple of indirect squirts last night.
This morning I gave them a light misting, with a few pieces of verm falling off each cake. Gonna increase the misting gradually. I also have a humidifier running nearby because it's really arid here.

I'm really optimistic about this run, but it would be really cool if any more experienced cultivators have feedback or advice!

It looks like a perfect SGFC setup to me :drunkaf:

:whathesaid:

looks great
Also, if your perlite is wet you shouldnt do much misting. unless you live in a desert idk

I only did a couple grows with a SGFC but I had to mist at least once a day from what I remember. They are very airy chambers so it’s most likely going to be necessary unless the OP is in a very humid place.

Looks really really good. Like the other comments, you only need to mist probably once a day, lightly. One critique that I have though, I would recommend - double the perlite that you have there. It looks as if you have about 3 inches or so, ideally you want 5-6 inches of wet perlite. If that is all you have, more misting may be required.

I would put the cakes closer together. It aids in the microclimate.

Thanks for the feedback! Its actually 4 inches of perlite in there. I really don't want to pull my cakes out or be moving them around too much. My understanding here is that more perlite equals more humidity right?

I lived in a dry climate so I would use 5-6” of perlite myself. It won’t hurt to move the cakes, you don’t want to overhand them but it won’t hurt to pick em up and move em.

Yesterday I came home from work to find my cakes starting the pin. Here's the alpha chode, which has doubled on size since yesterday when I took this.  Also got one or two of these goobers on four more of my cakes.

Does anyone know what's up with the scaly cap on this one?

Can't say I've seen pins that look like that but I've sure seen countless pics of pins that look a bit like that one, usually they fruit fine and I notice they grow is certain setups. Congrats on getting your sgfc cakes to pin and still going strong seems :coolpost:

That larger one popped up on a day I was at work for 12 hours, I'm guessing the air had dried out. I've been misting more since then. This morning I'm seeing pins on 6 out 10 cakes. If I'm having trouble keeping RH high enough- as indicated by dry caps, would anyone suggest pouring some water into the perlite or something?

Did you add more perlite like I suggested? Is the chamber against a wall? That will cause it to not function as well. Is there a fan or excessive AC blowing? Those will dry the chamber faster.

Haven't added the perlite. I think I'll do that today. Also it is in sort of a closet space without a lot of space around it. I've been fanning more to compensate for the lack of air circulation which seems to be helping.  My biggest issue right now is that two cakes still aren't pinning,  and one of them seems badly bruised.  I thought it was partly from dehydration but I'm not sure. It's the one in the pic here.

I also got one pin forming with weird coloration that has me concerned

Hard to tell here but that one pin is just very gray with some spots...

Looks dry and bruised. Be sure you’re operating the chamber correct and maybe mist it more. Check that the perlite is still moist and that the bottom holes are not clogged. And for the love of shrooms add the extra perlite already. Remember we don’t advocate fixing things in this hobby. Mistakes result in lost yields. If you don’t have things perfect they are not going to do well.

Ok this cake is fruiting like 10x faster than all my others. The veil JUST broke on this one, should I wait till I'm seeing spores to harvest, so I can get prints, or should I take it now to to save nutrients for other fruits and later flushes?
