Re: army national guard removes 'into the wild' bus [Re: Ogla]

Anyone read the book?  Seems the M's don't read much.  More a screen in front of their face at all times.

And nature became a part of me and me of it.  Those that get that sentence get it.  Most never will.  I live in a hick mormon trump town that is my hometown and I can't travel this summer.  God, as a vacation I walked all of from one side of Oregan to the other.  And people are like, why would you do that?  People that get it know.  I wouldn't do what he did, especially in Alaska but that is youth and what the author gets.  Like how he worked at Mcdonalds and they complained about his smell and he was just like, fuck this.  How much he despised it.  I read the article and don't see the need to pay 50 grand to send in that chopper to remove it but I kind of get why they did it.  Changes are a coming.

Fuck it.  On with life.  At least there are trails and rivers within walking distance.  No camping.  Whatever.  Will just drink beer and take my k-pins and hope the next summer is different.  Not afraid of Covid.  Notice how the media is playing up younger people getting it.  And notice that the few, the very few that die from it are fat with a shitty immune system.

God, if animals got it I would be concerned but they don't why?  Someone explain that one to me.  Plus why did HIV do it's thing on the poor population back then in the 80's?  Who did it target and effect the most?  Shut down the world, what a joke.  Rich white people don't want to share their toys.  And who is this effecting and killing the most?  Anyone see a simularity?

They were talking about this on the local radio this morn on the way to work so I decided to refresh my memory and go back down the Chris McCandless rabbit hole again. Looks like he survived out there just shy of four months before succumbing.

Had he just brought a map, which he purposefully did not -- according to a local park ranger he would've made it back out to civilization. Which he was trying to do according to his diary, but was blocked by the raging river. A map would have shown him an alternate route but he never knew it was there.

I recently read an article about 3 teenagers surviving for 50 something days on a small boat adrift in the Pacific Ocean

They drank rainwater and eventually started eating the wooden benches of the boat

Surviving on land with fresh water, shelter and food isnt impossible. He died from accidentally poisoning himself right?

Well it's an educated theory. Nobody knows for certain (I was reading the different theories on how he died this morning).

But when they found him he was severely emaciated and weighed something like 77 pounds. So accidental poisoning or not he was on the brink of death from starvation. He also wrote in his diary that he was now (at the time of the entry) in a life and death situation due to his lack of food intake.

People should have quit banwagoning the Into the wild guy and drive their own bus up there instead of being idiots that darwinism took over until the army had to step in :picard:

I mean FFS.

Sort of like the guy who studied bears then got eaten by one on live recording. Play with fire, you're gonna get burned. At least carry bear mace(12 gauge semi shotty works too). I mean FFS Wtf?

The author of Into the Wild (Jon Krakauer; he also penned arguably the best Mount Everest book of all-time also btw) admitted after the fact that he was to blame for what ultimately happened to the bus. His article in Outside Magazine and then subsequently the book, which then turned into a major motion picture, is what led to the fascination with it.

Yes, I saw the movie twice and read the flashnotes of the book.

I'm huge into outdoors and hiking - and it was a great story. Especially the part when the bear came around and he couldn't leave the bus. :grizzlybear:

It was sad as efff when he died.

And yes, accidental poisoning by a plant I can't remember the name of is a leading theory.

And apparently Krakauer was one of the first to explore the bus, as McCandless' things were still in the bus -- such as his toothbrush. He said it was eerily undisturbed and it almost felt ghostly, as if McCandless was just out gathering and would return at any moment.

Which alternative route was that. Just curious is all.

This is why another bus in that location is essential.  Too scared to pitch a tent all alone in the wilderness like that

Wikipedia says

Quote:

McCandless did not have a detailed topographical map of the region and was unaware of a hand-operated tramway that crossed the river 1⁄4 mile (400 m) away from where he had previously crossed.[14] At this point, McCandless headed back to the bus and re-established his camp. He posted an S.O.S. note on the bus, which stated:

Attention Possible Visitors. S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak to hike out. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening. Thank you, Chris McCandless. August?[20]
