Most people who are introverted had their personality kicked in by adverse experiences and drugs that harm self esteem.

How many introverts are really extraverts stomped into the pavement by life?

For fun, back when I scored INFJ, I did the test in the guise of one of my main roleplay personae. Lo! Behold! He was ENFJ. He didnt have 175lbs of excess lard holding him down though.

According to what I've read, introversion simply means you gain energy by spending time alone, whereas extroversion means you gain energy by spending time with others.

I'm sure it is possible to be confident and introverted.

Spending time alone, as a herd animal.

Many of us just have been in toxic herds and chose solitude over further toxicity.

We're a species of ape that is supposed to be active in the group at all times.

sure but in my case, the reason that spending time with others was draining to me was that I was constantly overthinking what people said, worried about how I was being perceived. Once I became confident that changed. I mean I still spend most of my free time alone or just with my girlfriend, but (prior to covid obviously) i found that after spending time at a party or something i would come home feeling very energized and happy, and to me that came from the sense that people wanted to talk to me, women wanted to flirt with me, etc. So i started walking away from big gatherings feeling pumped up rather than down in the dumps. Really all that changed was i got into good physical shape and i got headed down a career path i am proud of

Generally speaking i dont really buy into the tests
, i just think there is a general kind of social and emotional intelligence that makes some people more adaptable than others

We are active all the time. Like right now.

To me

Extroverts voice their insecurities, and project them onto others.

Introverts voice opinions and idealisations, and project them onto others.

It's all in relation. Even in what is perceived as 'isolation', we are still part of the "group" or "machine". Perhaps even fulfilling a role, so to speak, maybe even an important one.

I don't really like the words extroverted and introverted when it comes to one's personal social dynamics. Too simple, and most questionnaires which cement these theories as a tangible social dynamic sort of 'beg the question' from the beginning, in the sense that you have this spectrum you created and form fit questions to fit on these scales alone. Have taken the Myers Briggs test a few times with varying results.

I'm open to the idea that someone's personality changes with time, but not as open to the idea of such a simple test reliably determining such traits. Especially as the results themselves tend to imply a sort of identity that may guide the way a person answers such questionnaires long into the future despite changes in behavior. This personal identification with the results of the test makes such tests useless.

A similar test that gets too much attention are those political compass tests. People identify with the results, and if they don't like the results they change their answers until they find a spot they are happy or comfortable to identify with. It's honestly not much different than some of these personality tests.

I suspect for example that if you test a population of 18 year olds youll get a lot of Ps and if you test a population of 45 year olds you will get a lot of Js. But it is circumstantial. Older people value planning for the future more

agreed. And employers in the business world overuse tests like this to make decisions. It really just ends up being a test of who can figure out what the employer is looking for. Which means they end up hiring people who are simtultaneously smart enough to game the system and unprincipled enough to actually do it

I agree PatrickKn.

What the test is, imo, is simply an assessment according to a certain individual or group who is trying to objectively assess an ocean of 7 Billion+ individuals who all have their own subjective realities.

Introversion/Extroversion are useless terms in my opinion as well, and is simply a matter of circumstance. In some situations we will be "extroverts", in some situations we will be "introverts".

We all are undefinable in my opinion.

However, I do believe we also have a certain mode of being we try to hold on to individually, shaped by our past and perhaps genetics.

Why we act the way we do, or say the things we do is probably more complicated than taking a test.

These tests can offer insights and I think that is the extent of their use. Like, people might tell you things about yourself and these tests could help confirm or deny them despite being more of a "how do I feel today" kind of test. Things like introvert/extrovert make more sense on a scale. I'd sooner identify as an introvert but on a scale I'd say I'm more like 60% introvert. 40% leaves a lot of room to be friendly.

Fully agree - especially about everything being a spectrum rather than a binary thing.

I really don't like the idea of forcing my personality into any kind of mold. I've done that before when I haven't really known myself that well or at least lost touch with myself, and I can see why people find it comforting. But I think it's misguided.

But as someone who feels like a walking contradiction a lot of the time, I would be lying if I didn't say the result doesn't hit home for me. I try to be really impartial when I take these sorts of tests though. I'm sure even while I make that effort, there's a lot of unconscious bias in my answers and therein lies the problem in any test like this.

Not surprised at all. I feel like I’m changing as a person but this type has been with me the entire time I’ve been taking these tests. Except for the random ENFJ results where I’m feeling pretty social in life. My thinking and observing percentages went down!! But I guess mother would be proud I’m finally boosting that intuition and feeling heh. Makes for reading cards better as well.

I think I’m always going to be in the middle with making decisions, planning and work. Sometimes it will take me absolutely forever bc I am weighing the pros and cons, the best route, risk evaluation, of most things in my life. Planning for the long term is very detailed for me, with specific time frames of completing tasks. Short term is spontaneous and chaotic. As long as I keep following my carrot I put up for myself in the end, I feel like I’m heading in the right direction. With work I am constantly analyzing time management with amount of work that I can do, being smarter not harder, but not taking shortcuts that’ll end up making me do a subpar job. It’s all very boring. But it makes me really good at board games.

ENTJ-rationalist, the field marshal.
I have taken the "Please understand me" book version back in the late 90's. Then again ten years later and scored the same. I'll take the one remake posted tonight and see how it goes. I was the same 10 years apart though. These tests are interesting, but I will not base my thoughts/life/decisions on some personality test. I can and do get very judgmental.

INTP, once I got an INT/FP result but I've taken the Meyers-Briggs test many times with only that one variation.  I am definitely the kind of person who feels completely exhausted after social interaction whether positive or negative or neutral. Just drains me. A day working my very social job kicks my ass harder than 12 hours of running chainsaws in 90-100+ F weather.  Now I'm feeling some effects from aging, both examples truly kick my ass
