BRF TEK: Should Vermiculite be course or ground?
    #26813920 - 07/09/20 10:23 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

SWIM got some Vermiculite and it's quite ground, but also a tiny bit course as well.

Should SWIM keep it that way? Which way is it better? When it's a bit course? or when it's completely grinded?

medium coarse of course would be my preference.
opinions may vary though based on grow styles.

one can always sift to size.

Word. So, the vermiculite which is to be mixed with the brown rice flour has been completely grinded. Nevertheless, the one that will be placed on top of the BRF cake will be a bit coarse. Does this sound like a good idea?

Yeah, I grinded some up and will mix it with the brown rice flour, while the vermiculite that is to be placed on top of the cake- to protect it from contaminates- will be left a bit mid level coarse. This way, I think the rice flour might stick better with the ground verm, but the coarse verm might be good way to protect the whole cake from contaminates since it might less likely fall in between the spores that are colonising and cause contamination. Although, I might have to check that for myself.

Wish me luck! :tongue::stoned::mushroom2:

So the original pf tek uses fine grade verm. I always used coarse and i cant say enough good things about it. I actually prefer it to fine grade in brf cakes.

I've been using coarse too, but I don't think it matters... verm breaks down when wet anyway.

On the BRF subject, I'm about to make a bunch of BRF jars today without using a top coating.  Spent all day yesterday resealing tops and I think that will be enough.
