Literally, how do you guys rinse your grains (WBS for example?)
    #26813864 - 07/09/20 09:59 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

So I recently got a big bucket with holes in the bottom, and I’ll put it in my bathtub and spray higher pressure water in it and try to rinse the WBS good... but then I’ll check the water color by putting the grains in a bucket without holes and swirling it around a bunch, and dumping the water out through a strainer and it’s still dirty. There has to be a better way.

This is becoming a lot of work to do a bigger operation. I feel like a nitpick every step, but I don’t want to cut corners. Idk. Bucket with holes doesn’t seem good enough. Maby I shouldn’t do WBS so much.

Perhaps its time to make a DIY screen tray

I use a oversized stainless colondier myself.

I feel like the colander is similar to a bucket with holes, maby I’m doing too big of batches because I’ll double check the water color and it doesn’t come out very clear unless I mix by hand. Do you mix by hand or just let it run and occasionally move it around?

You like WBR? I don’t believe I’ve read much about it. I’m trying to try something new. I’m all anal about washing the shit out of my WBS, takes me like 20minutes for a big batch.

Try smaller batches. I like the collander cause u cant really overfill it. And yes, use a pasta scoop utensil for moving the grain around.

Or just go boig and build a screen mesh tray.

I toss mine in a big bucket and fill it with water then rake em around a lot, pour out the water while keeping the seeds in the bucket, repeat about 10 times -_- that’s just me though I’m super careful with them. Idk why it just feels nice seeing a perfectly clean rinse.

I add exact amount of scolding hot water to wbs for perfect moisture content every time after 1hourish of waiting. I do buy a 14.00 premium bag of wbs still got sunflower seeds, Fck soaking fck simmering I just need to expand grain so my spawn bags dont burst in the pc. I do have a few additives that help make it gritty so it doesnt stick together, milled flax works awesome!!!

I use a 5 gallon bucket with holes in it. Inside of that is a paint strainer. Then both of those are in a regular 5 gallon bucket. Turn the faucet on and use your arm to get in the mix them constantly and pouring off and pouring in new water. Scooping off sunflower seeds as you go. To do a 5 gallon bucket about 3/4 full of dirty ass WBS takes me about 25 minutes to clean and strain enough to make it ready for a soak.

Yeah it takes me about that long too and it’s annoying. If you have 7 jars going almost daily, that’s slot of time straining bird seed.. nonetheless agar, making lids, etc. I’m trying to save some time somehow and it sucks. I wish I could just get an automatic agitator, I’m not sure what would work in water. I actually strain it some, soak it, then strain it some more. Seems to work out the same.

Yeah as time goes on I do less and less.

Lately I’ve just been putting wbs and water in a jar and into the pc.

If I do prep them I pour them in the bucket and fill it up, scoop the floaters and leave it. Then when they’ve soaked long enough and the waters all oily and gross I pour it out, fill the bucket back up and pour it out again and that’s it.

I used to also scoop a big strainer full and put it under the faucet too.

Once I tried no prep and saw how much the myc loved it I stopped worrying about rinsing. The only good thing rinsing does is keeps them from clumping, but a quick spraydown does the same thing.

I just try to buy the triple washed oats when possible. Measure 2:1 dry oats and water into jars or bags, soak for minimum four hours (optional) stir and PC, shaking cooked jars immediately to prevent clumps.
Sometimes the batch has more schmutz in it or they're not triple washed. Haven't had any issues.

I’m with AKA on the no prep. It’s too easy and the myc doesn’t care at all. If anything it does seem to like all the dirt and whatnot.

Here’s one from my first batch of no prep. I was a little heavy on water and had a little clumping but it shook right up. This was the last jar of LI inoc and I was about out of liquid. I think this was a 12 day trip to 100%
Another no prep before inoc

I may have to try no prep once I get some clean spawn going again 😓. I need to save that time as much as possible. I get tired of rinsing seeds for an hour everytime 🥵

Roger do you notice the myc looks different in no prep jars?

Mine usually looks way fluffier and gets a velvety shiny type thing going on that doesn’t come across in pictures.

Same here. I don't even dry them out. I just boil them for 30 min. Toss them in jars and PC. No issues with agar, LC, g2g, or syringes. I use a mix of Rye Berries, WBS, and Oats.

Aka I use LI on all my jars and on most I couldn’t really see anything spectacular, though they did look good. But on the one pictured and another that I just dropped the leftover wedges in the myc was velvety smooth and looked really good. I think it’s because that batch was my first and was a little too wet with the LI added.

I’ve got some APE going now that should be thickening up soon, I can’t wait to see what they look like with that thick ass myc.

I e been leaning towards trying this, it’s hard to try something new when you’re pressed for time... but this is one hobby where patience is key, and in the end fooman would save time. You can pretty much tell they’re fully hydrated by looking at them too, no?

After the 20 min take out a few kernels and bite them in half. Judge by the inside whiteness. If I ran them a little long and there wasn't much white I'd make sure to strain longer and load a little drier. If they show decent white still I just load them up wet after a 2-3 min strain.

If they come out of the PC and are on the wetter side, do A2G or G2G and if they seem a little too dry make an LI to innoc them.

Just use the same brand WBS and take notes. I've got a book with everything I've done, recipe and prep-wise

Spawn bags are worth the money to me also I can fit 6qts or more in a 8qt pc which is another space and time saver and energy. Once that grain expands you can load it semi wet once it cools mix then wait a few days then inoculate them. I Had problems not waiting a few days  after pc"ing and using lc.
