The number of deaths for such a large population is extremely predictable, and almost any deviation from expected numbers is significant. If you don’t believe these 122,000 people died of covid, you neeed explain what they died from. This analysis suggests covid deaths are underreported by ~30%
https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2767980
Quote:
There were approximately 781 000 total deaths in the United States from March 1 to May 30, 2020, representing 122 300 (95% prediction interval, 116 800-127 000) more deaths than would typically be expected at that time of year. There were 95 235 reported deaths officially attributed to COVID-19 from March 1 to May 30, 2020. The number of excess all-cause deaths was 28% higher than the official tally of COVID-19–reported deaths during that period. In several states, these deaths occurred before increases in the availability of COVID-19 diagnostic tests and were not counted in official COVID-19 death records. There was substantial variability between states in the difference between official COVID-19 deaths and the estimated burden of excess deaths.
This is actually very interesting and I'm going to dive down this rabbit hole and get back to you.

By the way, I think it's hilarious how Enlil always whined about how he was an experienced attorney, but judging by this thread, I'd say it's about time he starts pretending he's a doctor too.

There's this weird ass idea of "basic human rights" going around the right wing.
You don;t have any basic human rights. By virtue of being a human, your only right is death, and there's only one way to choose when and where you exercise that right.
Every other right is given to you by the state, usually through the threat of violence against people that would take that right from you.

No, rights are things due to people and protected by natural law and they are not removed for long without disastrous consequences for those that remove them. We can expect no sympathy from tyrants when declaring them, therefore we should try to blend in, but they will be righted, as by gravity. And the due punnishments imposed for denial, at the judgement.

There will be no disasterous consequences from having to wear a mask during a pandemic. Your rights aren’t being violated. Grow the fuck up.

You are the one that needs to grow up. The masks offer no benefit. The risk isnt that high. The negatives outweigh the positives. The topic simply isnt that important yet here you are crying like a child about other people's opinion on it, then telling THEM to grow up. Lol.. What's the word for for your behavior...

Conservatives are finally pro choice, it only required them to be on the receiving end of the “oppression.” Of course wearing a mask and crying about it is laughable compared to bearing an unwanted child. Saving lives goes out the window when it all of a sudden gets mildly inconvenient.

That's how you protect yourself. Masks are primarily for protecting others. Unless you also walk around with goggles to protect your eyes.

I would hypothesize that masks provide only the illusion of safety. We wear masks to slow down the spread, not stop it, right? If this is indeed true, we aren’t protecting others by wearing a mask, but only prolonging the suspense until they eventually contract it.
Placing bets on the hope of an eventual vaccine is a pipe dream. COVID-19 is a single strand of RNA which is inherently unstable and subject to frequent mutation.
Mutations are mostly random but the phenomenon always converges to encourage survival of the organism thus, the virus will either A) become so deadly that it begins killing its hosts before transmission can occur (rare) or B) become LESS lethal to allow propagation (common). A vaccine would need constant iterating to keep up with mutations and could only approach the effectiveness of the flu shot which still experiences 250,000 to 500,000 deaths a year.
People would rather feel safe than informed.

It will slow the spread rather than stop it because assholes who don't wear a mask in public will continue to spread it even to people who do (because it can get into people's eyes).

I understand, but that doesn't prevent a vaccine which would require an occasional booster.

Covid-10 is WAY more deadly than the flu. If we're ok with millions of extra deaths, then yes, let's stop wearing masks as we wait for a vaccine.

If there's one thing conservatives have made clear, it's that they are perfectly fine with millions more deaths as long as it doesn't inconvenience them.
Some of the biggest mask supporters I know are conservatives that blew it off until someone in their family died.

Natural Law is very simple: I chase you, I kill you, I eat you. Those are your rights. Hobbes said it best.
