how to sterilize casing layer?

its nearly time to put down a casing layer on my first bulk attempt. i dont know how to sterlize my casing layer without losing or gaining water though. i will be using 100% coir. also here are some pics of my terraniums, if thats the right word for it?

mix yr coir with a little excess water
put it in the microwave for 5 minutes
take it out add a little more water and stir it
put it in for another 5 minutes
let it cool in the microwave
and voila sterile casing layer

i was a little unsure about using the microwave to sterilize, i think ill screw it up somehow and i REALLY dont want to screw this grow up. is it really that easy?

mix it with water in a bowl,(how much you would figure would be right, put coir in autoclavable bag and put in the oven for an hour at 170 degrees!

I'm pretty sure it would work, but i have never experimented with coir, peat moss all the way!
Putting things into the microwave to sterilize does not actually sterilize, it would only heat the substance up....it might a bit, but not as much as a pressure cooker or an oven would!

if yr scared or whatever you can do like some peeps and mix yr casing layer in jars and then pc it

my microwave is pretty damn powerful. Put my casing stuff in their for only 1 minute, and its hot as all hell.

microwave works fine a casing does not need to be perfectly sterile like a grain jar would.

also if doing a bunch just putting it on the stove in a pot and bringing to a boil will do the trick.

the best tip i can give you is this: i once knew a guy who had problems with contams in his casing layer. he mentioned this to me and i replied that i heard lime could really help with that. so he went out and picked up some pickling lime and started adding that to his casing layers and has not seen a contam since.

Something to try is put some known amount of water in the container you are going to sterilize in, nuke it for the 10 mins or whatever and measure how much you lost. That way you know how much extra to add. Or at least a close enough amount. I mean its all based on surface area so if you pat down your casing a little bit before you sterilized it, it would be really close.

TRS, Don't worry about it, forget about all that complicated stuff above (although it wouldn't hurt). You are through the hard stage, congratulations! You are home free more or less, aslong as your cakes are 100% colonised they are contam resistant .

I always use plain vermiculite straight from the bag as casing (moistened with sprays of water) and it works wonders. Has done for years and years, never had a problem!

xeno is right on, at least when working with straight verm.

TRS did mention using 100% coir, which being nutritive could allow contams in. hence busting out some lime to counterbalance that.

coir is the tits because myc will bust through it like nothing else, also gives a window for contams due to the nutes.

the best i have seen is to use a 50/50 coir verm and add some lime.

everyone has their own ways, just my 2 cents.

From waht i was told verm is banned from sale in NY because it has aspestos in it? I know the dust is carsinagetic, everyones a pussy, a bit of some dust never killed anyone.

It may stick, but it's damn easy and does the job as good as any other casing.

Maybe you should contact all vendors that sell "Growkits", and ask them to stop casing with verm because it sticks too much, I'de love to see the replies. Lmfao.

The ban is a myth. I've bought bag after bag in upstate NY.

It may be that there is no more in production, and what's being sold is the last of the stock.. but if that's so, there's plenty left.

That is pasteurization temperatures. Microwave it or pressure cook it if you want to guarantee sterility. The microwave method works very well and if you lose water, you can simply spray it with a dilute peroxide solution.
