Rye as THE bulk substrate and 2nd flush

I am great having success with grain spawn and transferring it to oak sawdust substrate (with verm). I would like to understand the following better:
1) Can I use 100% rye as bulk substrate at a 3:1 ratio to rye spawn? Good quality sawdust is expensive for me.
2) How do I make second flush stronger? What should I add to feed the mycelium, more rye, sawdust, verm?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Grain is not a good bulk substrate.
It's possible to fruit grain with a casing layer, but it gives much lower yields than mixing it with something that can hold water better. Have you tried coir/verm?
The best thing you can add for a better second flush is water.

Yeah if you're growing cubes the best thing to use is just coir/verm. Some people now have been using just coir with great results as well I just like verm and have my ratios and totals down already.
Float the sub in water for 4 hours or so to prep for the 2nd flush.
Coir/verm - 2nd flush

Coir is pricey unless you have a special source for purchasing?
I keep seeing the water recommendation. I am assume if I keep humidity above 80%, I would not need to add extra water. Is that not the case?

I am using a monotub with the entire bottom filled with oak-dust substrate and spawn with verm casing. I would have to get creative with soaking... let me think about that one... might use a plug at the bottom? Maybe I could sprinkle water?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean there. What I do is this - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662
Oh you mean for dunking your substrate for 2nd flush? I guess just heavy misting but then you have to be careful not to get too much water in there or else you'll maybe break your sub up trying to dump it out, or just use a hole to drain like you said. Even with high humidity you need to rehydrate the sub because mushrooms are like 92-93% water and when you harvest you're pulling all that water out of the system.
Coir is super cheap. At least if you live in the states, I don't know about other countries. You can order off amazon or go to the pet store and get a 3 pack of 650g coir bricks for like $9-12. I can make 7 of those shoe boxes with 1 brick of coir and 2.5 qts of vermiculite. That will put out around 10+ dry ounces of mush.
