Drying mushrooms
    #26812272 - 07/09/20 07:30 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

I have blow dried for about an hour or so with a hair dryer, (I am not in possession of a fan,) and have put in an airtight jar with dried magnesium sulfate. Was wondering if there is an ideal ratio of decadent to fresh mushrooms? I put in 100g Fresh with 100g Magnesium but i wonder if it is too little, also what is the expected wait time? Thanks.

Well if you wanna test if they are dry, just try to bend them. If the bend, they're not ready, if they break and sound like a cracker (cracker dry) they are done. Have no exp with MGSO4 so cant give you any number on that, but have you tried searching for that, might find some useful thread in the past. But tbh in my opinion just open after half a day or after a day and see if they are done. And if not just replace the stuff. Depening on how much you have and how expensive, you might consider swithing to white rice. The benefit there is, (is this possible for MgSO4?) to bake it to dry it again, and then you can reuse it. I could usually tell my rice needed to be baked by the fact that the mushrooms started getting bendy again, so they need to be stored in an airtight container with the rice too, because they are hygroscopic enough to pull out and bind the water from the air.

Id literally just go to Walmart and get a new dehydrator, its getting to the time of the year that fruits and vegetables are getting picked so they should have one available. Its critical to dry them asap and using anything other than a dehydrator is not getting them dry asap.

Not getting your mushrooms dry is even more expensive.

For fan drying you would want two whole days before putting them away with desiccant. I just don’t see the hair dryer being a viable option because you have to sit there with it, unless you get it on lower heat and point it at the pile for a day.

You could just make a tea with them and then freeze the tea. That will save all the actives that are still in there now.

lol go give the stoner kid at Walmart a quarter to make one disappear from the stockroom for you.

Mine just broke this morning so I went to get a new one and they’re almost sold out.

If you still have them drying thats fine but another sure fire way to preserve them is to make tea out of them and freeze it. Fresh mushroom tea is great, its a little better than dry mushroom tea imo, but getting them to a stage of preservation is critical in preserving the quality of the mushrooms. I would highly recommend a dehydrator but sometimes you don't have one right when you need one.
