Well fuck me.... I just found out this forum exists!! Seems like gets a fair bit of traffic but fuck all posts.

Anyway, thought I'd start a thread for anyone to post hunting related pics. Recent kills, guns, gear, whatever you like. General chat too.

I'll start it off with a 7 point I got yesterday. Unfortunately shrapnel somehow ruptured his bowel, so I was only able to take the front legs, backstraps, head and neck. It was a devastating waste, but it is what it is.

I don't take my phone on hikes, so I only have a back at camp shot.

Ima try and revive this sub-forum, any help will be appreciated.

Good looking buck dude. What is it exactly? I did some elk recon a couple days back. Saw the heard around twilight. For sure going to be hunting this area this fall.

It's a Fallow deer. Probably the most common type in this part of SA. I must have seen 20 the following evening. I'm going to do some recon myself this weekend with my kids, and hopefully drop one the following weekend.

Good luck with the Elk dude. We don't have them here. They look massive! What calibre do you use for those big fuckers?

Very cool I love the antlers on that guy. Thanks and good luck to you as well. I'm using a 308 for elk and deer since both get pretty big around here. It's cool your kids are into with you. My daughter is opening up to it and she just caught her first fish last visit. One step at a time

My eldest two are both 12, and to be fair it takes some convincing to drag them away from a warm house with an xbox's and into the rain to walk hills. They enjoy getting out when they do.

My 5 year old is keeeen as fuck, but not really upto the steep hills yet. I might drag him out in a few weeks just for a fun hike. Teach him to stalk and keep quiet.

For eating we have Deer, goats, pigs, Kangaroos, rabbits/hares, duck and quail. I knock off the feral cats and foxes whenever I see them too, because they fuck shit up.

What's in your neck of the woods?

How's kangaroo taste? I'm jealous you've got pigs. My state is one of the very few without a hog population in the USA.

Over here there's elk, black tail deer, mule deer, longhorn sheep, cougar and black bear. Some water fowl too and your garden variety rodents. I've never hunted cougar but apparently it tastes like top quality pork.

They say we have 6 species of deer here, but I've only ever seen Fallow and Red. Fuck knows what the other ones are.

Roo's delicious. Very lean and dark. I eat it at least once a week. Most people fuck up the cooking and don't like it, and it leaves a particular smell on your pan if you leave it laying around for a while after you've finished cooking, so that can put people off too. There's sooooo fucking many of them, I just don't understand why more people don't eat them.

It's a few hours drive for pigs and goats so it's a rare thing for me.

I'd love to try some of what you have on the menu over there. Bear and cougar sound so exotic to me.

Yeah I can't help but assume an animal that is so muscular must need a slow and low cooking style but no doubt worth it. I'm only after deer and elk personally. I keep a cougar tag just in case but I've never enjoyed goat/ram/lamb and bears are disgusting fuckers riddled with trichonosis (I think it's spelled). The fur would be awesome but I'm not a trophy hunter. The terrain here is a bitch and a half. It's a conifer rainforest that feels like a green fog to try and hike through.

If you and your family end up stateside I'll tell you where to find some dinner

That's where most people fuck up roo, it actually needs to be cooked fast and searingly hot. The key to deliciousness is in the prep. A long soak in a light marinade and a sharp and deep meat tenderizer make it pop.

Now of course you can low and slow a stew in a durry oven, and it'll come out like beef, but you can't beat a good old roo steak.

Thanks for the offer mate. Can't see the covid travel restrictions lifting for a few years at least, so I'll just shelf that one

Oh cool so you steak out most of it rather than tying up roasts? Damn I need to find some roo meat.

You need to post up some of your recipes in the cooking forum!

It's usually more of a short list of available ingredients than a recipe  never anything fancy.

For example me and my best mate are currently hooked on cooking roo steak (just using a blandish marinade he gets from the butcher). Then frying damper rolls on the same hotplate over the fire doused in garlic olive oil.

So basic, so fucking good.

What do you do with your elk meat?

None the less that forum is almost as under appreciated as this one. I'm sure most folk would see that as a unique igredient to be privalged enough to acess.

Elk is a pretty versatile meat and there's so much you can get pretty creative. I like to steak the backscrap and front quarters and tie up the hindquarters and brisket. You end up with tons of ground meat. This year I really want to get into sausage and jerky making.

A mate of mine gave me his dad industrial mincer. I haven't used it yet. Roo makes shitty sausages imo.

I'm keen to do some deer snags. I'm just not really sure how to do it right. I guess you'd mix in some lamb for fat content? Any thoughts?

This dude is rad. He's got a ton of awesome butchery and cooking videos. I even bought his book The Merchant of Venison. Everything you will ever need to know about dismantling and cooking a deer is between those pages.

I ended up taking four kids with me. Two of mine and two of an old friends. We didn't get a deer, but spotted a few on neighbouring properties.

I hadn't organised anything for tea, so I dropped a roo on the way out and we had grilled backstrap and chips for tea. Just made a rub with various herbs, dried garlic, salt, pepper and left it soak in olive oil for an hour before I cooked it.

I fucking nailed the cooking too, it was so tender. I barely got any because the kids were demolishing it as I sliced it up.

Snagged a Fallow spiker today. It's a really clean beast. Backpacking it out wrecked me, but I'm positive that shit makes the meat taste 20% better.
