Agar question

Hey guys it’s Been awhile! So I’ve been really diving into agar recently and I’ve come across something really odd, Atleast to me odd lol. As you can see at 12 o’clock there was a contam I believed to be bacteria basing it just off of the other contams I’ve had due to bad sterile procedure being as I’m still newish to agar. I decided to make transfers out of the plate and see what would happen and it seems that the myc has over taken the bacteria!? Is this common or is this just a 1 off thing?

Myc takes over even those sporulating mold colonies. Its a 'normal' thingy.

But will the parts that have been over taken be clean at that point? Like does the myc kill the contam?

Probably not. Avoiding those spots is a good call. Mold colonies, as is, that has sporulated on a plate is very hard to shake off even if you go or cut the opposite way. It could take a couple of transfers. Probably by retransferring myc substrains waaay early, before your mold sporulate.

You definitely are better off taking transfers from growth that hasn't grown into or over bacteria, and especially not mold. Swiping spores in a zigzag pattern across the plate can give you a better idea where to look for germination, and to avoid growth outside of the pattern. It also gives you a better shot at having some growth on the plate that is away from the contams too. Like said if you have mold on a plate and it hasn't sporulated you might be able to get a clean transfer. If it's sporulated (it'll usually turn green, black, blue etc) you can try but your chances of getting mold in your culture increase. Definitely do not use a flow good with sporulated mold on the plate, only SAB , so they don't blow everywhere.

All of the plates with mold on them I just tossed. I had a mold outbreak and my last house and never got another clean jar. I have since changed my practice on how I do things but I still refuse to open anything with mold it just sketches me out.
