Ive been wondering the same thing, if they are worth it or not. I know alot of people find purifiers in Goodwill's etc for cheap, but I saw an equation that shows how many things are still airborne due to the 1% that they don't capture. And I skipped it and am trying to build a hood.

The laminar aspect of air flow is missed with that kind of filter fan.
It will create air currents that can bring more contamination from outside of your work area.

You're better off with a SAB for the above mentioned reasons, save the dough for an actual HEPA and blower

This has been discussed quite often on this forum and likely others as well. You can certainly get away with just about anything for a while, you can get away with spores to grain in open air for instance, it is not recommended despite fervent arguments in favor of the practice by inexperienced individuals.
It's difficult enough for new people to get their head wrapped around the procedures and kit lists for this hobby without people dipping in to give poor advice.
As mentioned above this device is incapable of producing laminar flow and is therefore not useful for that application. The unit linked in the OP is intended for another purpose, use it for that purpose.
Being "psycho clean" may perhaps be a necessary condition for sterile work, it certainly is not sufficient however to create laminar flow from a unit incapable of doing so.
Build a real hood or use a SAB. Don't waste time pounding expensive square pegs into round holes.

That’s because to an old hand it reads like: “can I use a hammer to open a bottle of wine?” For most people the answer isn’t yes.

Thanks for the constructive criticism. I get it, its not designed for it. I was just speculating that using a system like the air purifier and placed it horizontally and attaching it to a large monotub (200l) similar to an SAB, which could provide a plenum for laminar flow. The DIY hoods dont seem very discreet. I appreciate the advice so far

as said im psycho clean and use mine in a sealed lab in a solid home as a general air purifier.
i would NOT, i repeat absolutely NOT use it as a replacement for an actual flow hood. they will dramatically thin out enemy spores, but they will probably not filter floating bacteria.
as those guys have indicated, they do not blow sterile air.
but then again i routinely open wine with screw drivers, so dont listen to me.

I’ve opened wine with iso alcohol and string. Not a good practice.
