I heard about people picking liberty caps = psilocybe semilanceata in the UK, thats in the fields and on grass though, not in forests. Look near sheep fields or other animals, last years dung spots is where this year they like to grow.
Growing isnt that hard either, if we're talking actives here you could try a growkit for the start ... (oh just wait for the shitsorm, people hate growkits here, maybe its the lack of effort )

This time of year, you would be looking for chicken of the woods (laetiporus sulfureus), which grows on dead wood; I usually see it on oak. In a similar vain, the hen of the woods/maitake (grifola frondosa) can also be encountered, bit tends to be less common than the chicken/sulfur shelf.

Fairy ring mushrooms (marasmius oreades) are also in season; look in grassy fields and lawns.

It may be a bit early, but blewits (clitocybe nuda) are a relatively easy find as well. Grows in wood mulch under deciduous trees; often found by roadsides/along paths.

Virtually impossible to miss in grass are shaggy parasols; macrolepiota procerea. The unopened caps can be used like button mushrooms, and the opened/flattened caps make for a nice fritter.

Speaking of button mushrooms, on rich soils you may of course find them in the wild as well, or related species (agaricus bisporus, a. campestris, etc.)

Of course there's also the omnipresent inky cap (coprinus comatus); easy to find as it'll even pop up in paved parking lots, but I personally don't care for their taste and texture. Only good to eat when young with egg-shaped cap that's not yet open at the bottom.

If you're lucky you may stumble across summer boletes (boletus aestivalis) in the woods, but generally, porcini are easier to hunt (because more plentiful) if you wait a few weeks.

You may also have good luck finding chantrelles (cantharellus cibarius and other species that are virtually indistinguishable from it) which, if you find them, tend to be fairly plentiful and easy to identify. Like blewits, they favor wood mulch, but are a little earlier in the season; right now is a good time, extending towards early autumn. In the same/similar habitat you may also find the horn of plenty (craterellus cornucopioides).

And many, many more...but the above are a few popular choices that are (almost) in season and may be found where you live.
