Closet got too hot for a few days, caused contams in jars?
    #26808947 - 07/07/20 12:12 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

So I used 5th transfer agar, and the agar jars looked great. I did G2G and they looked good, but it got too hot in the closet and I was going through some life BS and forgot. It looked like it was sweating inside the jars, and I saw some trich or whatever. Heat can cause this obviously? I spawned them anyways, any chance I can get a flush out of them?

High temps can increase contam growth likelihood. If you spawn grain that had trich already growing  they are 100% fucked! No flush happening.

If it was mold, it will spread definitely.

With bacterial spawn you may get away, but not with mold.

What temps we're talking about?

EDIT: Man...3 seconds late

Mold won’t come out of nowhere, if the plates were clean it must’ve gotten in during inoculation. This is my first summer growing and it’s amazing how much difference 10 degrees makes. I’ve had tons of green lately too.

Even my agar jars got contamed, that were flawless until the heat hit. The jars have water droplets on the inside now too, so I’m thinking it’s the heat. I sanitized like a madman, I’m pretty pissed. I’ve only had a couple agar plates (besides once when i was lazy,) ever contam so I’m sure I’m doing everything right. I have like 20 PCed grain quarts that are not inoculated yet, in the same fucking closet. They look good, they were on the drier side to begin with... I hope they’ll be fine.

I can’t say if it’s mold or not, one of them seemed to have a color but it was so small and hard to tell. If you had trich in a smaller closet, would one need to pull everything out and sanitize the whole closet?

What temp did the closet hit ? I am also utilizing a closet space and there is an attic space adjacent to my closet that gets super hot which makes my closet hot. I have a digital Bluetooth hygrometer in the closet that I can check from my phone when I’m in the house, and saves data for me when I’m gone so I know the average temp for the whole day. Averaging 77*F right now, and looking for ways to keep this around 72*F. I bought a tiny personal ac I’m gonna run in the closet when I’m not home

77 is ok. I didn’t run into problems until it was 80-84 24/7. Then tubs aborted and contams exploded.

Just make sure you get some air moving in there.

Definitely think it was steady around 80. It’s upstairs, been 90s outside, closet door shut. Maby even hotter then 80. I fucked up, can’t believe it.  I think some of the jars look ok,  I contams that are boldly staring at me. I have like 20 jars that are not inoculated in the same closet. They are PCed though, wonder if they’ll be ok?

Yeah I got fans inside the closet, AC in the room, and keep it open when I’m home. Going to try to work on a temporary system to aim for like a 70-72 average and I’ve never said this but I can’t wait until winter lol

I’m not super confident in my spawn judging, you should post in general discussion too. It looks pretty good to me besides the grain might be prepped too wet. A lot of times tons of rhizo isn’t great but that looks healthy and organized.

I've seen better...looks a bit bacterial at the top but you can still use for spawn.

Thanks bud. Like I said I think it got too hot for too long, I’ve never had issues like this before with multiple jars

I`d also spawn.

With pcing you open a time window for good mycelium.
With higher temps you may encourage contams to win
the race against our lovely myc.

Perhaps a bit too much grains in the jar.

I like mine at about 700-800ml.

Doing shoeboxes?

Ya I overfilled them bad boys for sure. Ya shoeboxes is all I’ve been doing lately. I’m hoping these can turn out, I spawned 5 shoeboxes and have like 20 jars that were not inoculated yet in the hot closet...

Yeah, with high temps you should have the
fastest myc and cleanest spawn as possible.
Then you can get away with it.

Thanks bro. I spawned 5 shoeboxes Saturday I think, so shouldn’t be long. I only started growing this past winter but it was so easy, literally almost set and forget.  Now the heat is in my kitchen. Luckily the closet is in my bedroom so I simply open the door. I’m curious about how  yours goes as well. Give us an update
