Your best bet is to buy some grain spawn. Take that grain spawn and make Petri dishes. Then from the petri dish make master slants. Now you have a future supply to make spawn. Then take the leftover grain spawn and do G2G (grain to grain). In about 10 days you will have all the spawn you want. I would just use whole oats as the grain for now it is cheap. Then you can move to whole oats and millet 50/50 by weight.
Here is where to get your grain spawn...

once you get that far. Come back here and we will go from there. In the meantime try and find soy hulls and hardwood fuel pellets. Don't pay over $6 for a 40 lb bag of fuel pellets. 40 lbs of fuel pellets and 40 lbs of soyhulls will make about 33 5 lb bags of sub. You should at least get 1.5 lbs of mushrooms 1st flush from a 5 lb bag. so that's about 50 lbs of mushrooms.
You might want to buy some 14A bags also...

This is great info. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I have a long way to go, but I'll start slowly and come back here then!

Trust me my friend we all have a long way to go. But the quickest way to get to where you want to go is to start now. I sent you a PM also.

Look up masters mix if you have soy hulls or are getting them, otherwise just use fuel pellets alone.

Forrester, is there any legitimacy to the few people who mentioned using dog food instead of soy hulls over the years? I've been meaning to try it but the thought of pressure cooking dog food has me a bit worried about the smell.

Seems legit. It would be a good nitrogen source / supplement. I've never used it, but I've eyed it and done some structural assessments on it - i.e. thrown it in a pan with some water and heated it up to see what happened.
I'm with you though, the smell... The protein/nitrogen content of most dogfoods I've looked at is similar to other supplements that are commonly used.
Ol' Roy High Protein with Beef & Lamb Flavor Dry Dog Food is 27.0% Crude Protein. Using Kjeldahl Nitrogen conversion factor of 6.25 you get a nitrogen content of 4.32%
For Comparison: Wheat Bran is 2.7% N Soybean Hulls crude protein is 9.5%-18.5% would equate to 1.46% N - 2.96% N Alfalfa (my preferred supplement) is on average 2.37% N
Feeds are generally priced by crude protein / nitrogen content though so it's going to cost about the same regardless of what you use.
