Anything by Tchich Nhat Hanh, he is my favorite person ever! Also, The Dhammapada, the sayings of the Buddha. Mine is subtitled "a new rendering by Thomas Byron with a preface by Ram Dass". It has photography in it too, beautiful. Good for you! Buddhism can teach us so much. A wonderful, wonderful philosophy/religion! Good luck.

My favorite book, for people that want to know 'What is Buddhism', is The Accidental Buddhist: Mindfulness, Meditation, and Sitting Still by Dinty Moore.  http://www.dintywmoore.com/budd.htm

The book follows the travels of the author as he sets out across America to discover what exactly an American Buddhist is.  Through his eyes, the reader learns as he learns.

The book is very easy to read.  Here is an online excerpt from the book: http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0299/moore/excerpt.html

If you want something more in depth and technical, I recommend The Three Pillars of Zen: Teaching, Practice, and Enlightenment
by Phillip Kapleau Roshi.  http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385260938/002-8184796-9981638?v=glance

How much prior knowledge to you have about buddhism? If the answer is none, then I would suggest anything by Jack Kornwall. If the answer is quite a bit, then I would suggest "Selected Buddhist Sutras" or "A Sourcebook in Indian Philosophy" - go straight to the source, ya know? Or anything by DT Suzuki if you are interested in Zen. But I would actually not suggest anything by the Dalai Lama... in my mind, his books are really catered to western audiences, and he doesn't really say much. I know, it's a mean thing to say, and I really respect the guy... but after reading "the art of happiness" i thought that i could gain much more from reading Suzuki and meditating than I could from his writings...

Well if you ask anyone in the Spirituality & Philosophy forum - they'll tell you that you shouldn't read any books and you'll learn nothing if you do.  BTW - don't go into that forum.

I just finished a book that was called Hardcore Zen.  It's fucking great!!! The guy pretty much puts all the bullshit aside - tells you not to believe everything he says but to question everything he says - explains that even real Buddhists do not believe in enlightenment and it's all about RIGHT NOW.

The book rules - he also has a website called www.hardcorezen.org

I warn you though - the book will make you angry - and that's good. Question everything you read.

Thats the attractive thing about buddhisim
even the buddha said his teachings MUST be questioned.

What they would have meant in S&P forum is wisdom/enlightenment
is not intelectual you cant learn it like maths.
I have read a bit on buddhisim and its come to a point reading more
is a waste (I could ramble more) but to have any gain I would
need to meditate more but Im really lazy.
Read this
Its a beginners guide to buddhist meditation from a westerners point
of view just totally hits the spot. well did for me

Oh its the buddhas birthday on sunday burn a few incense. Buddhist Meditation for Absolute Beginners

Depends what you are more interested in, Buddhism as a religion to follow or Buddhism as means to enlightenment. Depending on this you should choose a different school of Buddhism. Zen, Kagyu, Gelupa or Nyingma (Dzogchen). I follow the latter because it is a straight path without any 'religious' overtones. It depends on a person completely, some people need structure and rituals, some people can bend the spoon with their mind.
I am no expert on other Buddhist traditions but for Dzogchen anything by Nomkai Norbu is worth its weight in gold, this book is essential -

What is your opinion of enlightenment? You mean like those people on the cover of the new ages books that have a blue glowing halo around them?? im sorry but Buddhism teaches REALITY. the enlightenment that THIS IS PARADISE and there's nothing better.

You want to find Utopia by "enlightenment"? Well - by definition - utopia is a dream world - can't be reached - ever!

that's what i like about buddhism - there's no bullshit to it. if you're enlighened... you aren't someone different... you're someone who got completely balanced with reality. that's all.

buddhism in a whole is "Question Authority".

oo and those folks in S&P will bitch you out if you mention you're learning.

Awakening The Buddha Within- Lama Surya Das

A very good book that covers all of the important aspects of Buddhism and how to apply and practice it in your life. It's also written for westerners.

Also every psychonought should own a copy of Be Here Now by Ram Dass. :sun:

Dude..S&P is an awesome forum..IMO atleast..I mean, if you choose to participate in discussions, as long as you're careful with how you present your ideas, all should be good.. By this I mean, try not to speak like you know something as truth unless you can provide some sort of convincing evidence..and when/if shit hits the fan, just do your best to not let others get to you. In most cases, all they are trying to do is give others another perspective on the subject..whatever it may be.

There is alot that could be learned at the shroomery..and S&P has been one of my favorite forums for years. Not to say that you or anyone should like it.. but I mean..why let a couple bad apples make you think it not worth visiting at all?

My appologies for going off topic..I guess just felt the need to defend a forum I have alot of respect for..
