My first cannabis plant do you think it’s female?
    #26806887 - 07/06/20 02:12 PM (1 month, 5 days ago)

This is my first plant, my mate found the seed in some Jaffa cake weed so thought let’s plant it and see so gave it to me to see if I can grow it haha !

Those are a few days ago, this one is today

I have been reading online to learn how to grow and things as I have other seeds so decided I’ll finally try, I think it will be female but here are some images I took today.

What do you think who have grown before?

Dead excited to see what will look like, will post update with pics as she (hopefully) flowers

Nah. Looks like pistils. I'd say she's a biological female.

The pistils seem wider at the base and i always saw hairs coming out.
Those look like balls with little stems.
Can't hurt to keep it around and wait longer but i'm sticking with male

Youll need to flower for a couple weeks before you can really be sure. Looks plenty big enough to start flowering cycle.

Ditto good node spacing. I must say it looks pretty damn good for someone whos never grown this plant before. Good job OP

Calyx with pistils. Not balls.

If I were a betting man, and I am, I would put my last $20 on female.

Thanks! Maybe beginners luck but hopefully I’ll do as well next time! I do enjoy growing things.

I’ll add more images as soon as any more change. I’ve just set the lights onto 12/12 I bought a 600w after watching a video on lumens etc, anyway I’ve kept it on 400w you can use four settings, and seems like it’s enough so I might not increase to the full 600w?

Just Switched the feed from the grow to bloom. Struggled deciding of feeds the markets like an Aladdin s cave so many to choose from and types for different grows, confusing for a noob hahaha.

Right on dude! Are you growing anything else under that 400/600w? If I was using a 600w I would be growing 4 to 6 plants in a 9 square foot spot with the light about 24' above the canopy.

I follow a lot of growers on instagram like str8organics off the top of my head ik he posts pics of some of the nutrients he uses. but theres also growers network on youtube that I've been watching lately. another good place to see what the pros are doing.
Anybody still visit the growery?? or is that a ghost town?

I spent most of my time there when I first signed up here. When I came back to the fold it was a ghost town inhabited by young turks. No one I memebered had posted recently. Sad. I'd love to see more action there.

Since this thread/pics were posted a day ago, by now the pistils on that calyx should be clearly seen with the eye (if you don't have bad eyes/vision).

Everyone has their own preferences about how they like to grow....

...but just my 2 cents, I'd suggest growing the organic route with soil that is actually alive and not synthetically with bottled salt based "nutes" .

Sounds like it's your first grow and you're growing indoors...so don't trip on it, but next time around maybe look into and consider growing organically in live soil.

I have a couple of Kratom under and some salvia and one cactus, a bit random haha. I’ve left it on 400 but maybe I’ll turn it up to 600 but the plant seems really good, on full I’m sure I could get four plants under though

Yes nutrients I found it a mine field, so I planted in a mix of peat and compost, and these are the nutrients I bought, a friend of mine suggested using tomato feed haha.

These are a little pricey for what you get though, being first time I thought I’d buy something ‘proper’ as you do

Wonder what specifically he is referring too, what modern disease, what old food?

Also for an outsider when it comes to cannabis growing, what is a pistil?

A pair of hairs that come out of all the node and internodes when flowering. You'll get pistils or nanners. Your wanting pistils.

I think polaritymind is referring to organic nutes. Which I'd advocate as well down the road.

Little update.
So image 1 is the same place I showed before but they haven’t really changed.
Image 2 and 3 are the next level up, are those little pistils or wishful thinking?
Image 4 around the other side looks like something might be growing out ....

make sure to be consistent with the lighting. it should be getting as much light as possible during veg (18+ hours/Day) and when you flower it 12 hours light/12 hours dark. the important part is not interrupting the light/dark cycle during flower because this can cause male flowers to form on a female plant (hermaphrodite) and the plant will self-pollinate and try to go to seed

Just a little update on her she is coming along well, I think.

Before it’s too late and since was a random seed my mate found in the weed, I’ve taken a couple on clones so hopefully at least one will take.

would probably pinch that main stalk and fold it over in the middlish so you get a nice even canopy and light exposure. I was surprised how much folding abuse they can take

Yeah shes ready for some training for sure. I would recommend cleaning up the bottom too. No benefit having the plant give energy to foliage thats below the optimum light exposure level. Looking good duder! Shes looking nice and kushy.

Yes my friend who knows what to do told me to look at topping, and linked me some articles I’ve had a good read and agree, but as it’s the first time I decided this time I’m going to see how they grow without any pruning. I’ve taken two clones so will try next time, but I wanna just leave her and see how they grow naturally myself as I’ve never seen a live plant over a foot tall so it’s really interesting

I think I’ll remove those lower leaves though as you say, they’re not doing much there can tell by appearance so will get those off carefully, and see how she goes on.

In other news, I turned the lights up to 600W but she was a bit close I think and I found this when I looked this morning :facepalm3:I’m so gutted hahaha, I’ve turned the lights back to the 400W and moved a little higher again.

Not too bad she'll bounce back just fine. Other than a little burn she's still looking good.

She’s getting little bobbly bits, maybe first signs of flowers? I hope so, so exciting the first time you grow something, but she is getting a bit big, I don’t want to prune this first time around, but I may have  to soon !

I’m ordering a tent and extraction fan, decided to do it more proper!

A few new images,

Any light outside the normal 12/12 cycle may turn it hermie so a tent would help block light.

I have a tent and filter on order :dancer: decided to have a real go as enjoying it, cost a bit but got a 1m x 1m x 2m tent and what hopefully is a decent extraction kit, and a small clip on fan for inside.

Was going to get a fan controller but the fan is two speeds so will see how it goes.
Wish it will come soon! Loads better then. As it is she will be getting some light in the dark time so not ideal.

make sure to be consistent with the lighting. it should be getting as much light as possible during veg (18+ hours/Day) and when you flower it 12 hours light/12 hours dark. the important part is not interrupting the light/dark cycle during flower because this can cause male flowers to form on a female plant (hermaphrodite) and the plant will self-pollinate and try to go to seed

The most important thing is no light whatsoever during the 12 hours of darkness in flowering. If the lights go out for a bit during the light period it won't hurt anything.

During the vegetative stage 24 hours of light will get you to the size where you want to start flowering quicker, but 18 hours is fine. The only reason not to do 24 hours is electricity costs.

Thanks yes. Absolutely this was a big part of why I decided to get a tent, smell obviously was a factor, but once I learned about light pollution and much they don’t like this etc, I decided yh, I’ll have to buy one. Soon as here I’ll get the plant inside and hopefully all will be well!

Pics 1,2,4,5 in the last group of pics you posted are showing male flowers starting...especially pic 4(at the edge of your middle finger). You are going to want to remove those before they start throwing pollen, or your buds will be full of seeds.

The problem with growing seeds from a bag of weed is that it is almost always caused by hermaphrodite pollen. People don't usually keep males around who aren't breeding. Seeds produced from hermaphrodite pollen are much more likely to do the same, especially when stressed.

I see what you're talking about, they were there before he started flowering and why i thought it was a male.
I Don't have experience seeing herms from the veg stage. Also i thought herm plants is where they get the feminized seeds from?

I was worried this may be the case, I’ve taken more images of some places.
I have some feminised seeds here I’ve bought I plan to grow And some cbd seeds also, I have a tent on order etc so better luck next time around I guess haha! Was a nice practice run.

Definitely male flowers in pic three(and 2,5,7). I would pull all of those off. You can get seedless buds from hermie plants if you stay on top of removing the male flowers before they open into the banana bunch looking pollen sacs that throw pollen everywhere.

@c12- Yeah. They usually chemically induce male flowers to form on a female branch to get fem seeds. I think colloidal silver is the most popular method for doing that.

You should definitely look into training methods for next time! The SCROG method is my personal favorite,  it's a bit labor intensive if you have alot of plants but if it's only a couple it's really fun (SCROG stands for Screen Of Green)

Basically you put a firm screen about 12 inches above the plants (start training from a young age obviously) and once they reach the screen you carefully bend the plant over everywhere it pokes above the screen and you either fold or gently tie it to the screen so that every node gets the same light exposure and you get nothing but top buds (trim off all growth under the screen) it works extremely well when combined with topping and super cropping (super cropping is where you top one node and when 2 new nodes pop up you top both those to then get 4 new nodes to pop up and top those to get 8 new nodes and so on and so on)

I'm sure I didn't explain the SCROG very detailed but you can find better descriptions with pics online

If you stay on top of pinching off the Male flowers before they drop pollen you can avoid getting seedy weed but make sure to look very often and in depth so you dont miss any

For feminized seeds you spray a flowering branch with colloidal silver (make sure to not get it on ANY parts of the plant you intend to consume) and it produces the pollen sacs (dont know the scientific reasoning behind why it works) and since the pollen sacs are generated on a female you get female pollen thus female pollen plus females flower equals female seed basically, you do have to be careful because if I remember right the feminized pollen can still spread pretty easily and you could accidentally end up with seedy weed still (may be wrong on how easily the female pollen spreads, been a bit since I've feminised seeds)

A simple and reliable test to see if your lights are to hot is to hold your hand above your plants for a couple minutes and if your hand gets uncomfortably hot then your light may be to close, obviously a thermometer is ideal but the hand method works pretty damn well

Be careful with salt based nutrients used in soil less grows and hydro set ups because they can harm the microbes in soil

Consider looking into beneficial predatory  mites to like N. Californicus, andersonii, swirskii, etc the beneficial mites will eat the bad mites (spider mites, 2 spotted mites, russets, etc) and then you dont have to spray pesticides if you use beneficial bugs often enough, green lacewings are good for eating aphids and mites as well

Consider a PH probe for testing the PH of your water and the run off if you want to get super accurate and dialed in with your grows to make sure you dont get what's called "nutrient lock out" this happens when the growing mediums PH is to high or to low and it causes the plant to not be able to absorb the nutrients (like the nutrients are locked out of the plant)

- just wanted to share some tid bits I've learned, no harm meant, besides the hermies those plants are looking good especially for your first time!  :pipesmoke2:

Thanks for all replies!

Because it wasn’t planned I didn’t have a tent so light might be factor yes, but had those bits all the way so I’m not sure. Either way, my tent and extraction kit were shipped today, so the seeds I’m planting now will be in proper conditions, decided I enjoyed it so will do a proper grow, and the seeds I bought are feminised!

I have pulled as many male ‘bits’ off as I can spot, I’ll not kill it, first plant I grew after all so I will see what it does, Should be inside the tent within the week so long as no hold ups with shipping.

It’s good to know can still get some weed so I’ll check daily and try to remove any male bits I see, with some luck it’ll give me something!

Once the tent is here it’s two meters tall so I’ll be able to do better lighting also, however 600W burned it so I’ve left on 400W for now. Nice tip with the hand test for heat though makes sense!

Hadn’t thought about monitoring ph but I guess that’s something I can look into as I start this ‘proper’ grow soon thank you! So many other bits of kit we can buy for it all, maybe in time I’ll add more to it as I get better and learn! :awethumb:

It does seem to be very healthy, bar those leaves I burned because the light was too close, so that’s one boo boo I learned from during this dummy run

I must carry on after buying lights tents and fans though. I’d like to see a return on my investment hahahaha

@dndrnd

Super cropping  is were you pinch the stem just enough to break the cambium then let it heal to make a knuckle , preferably multiple times up the branches as it grows , increases the xylem and phloem  space resulting in bigger buds and in certain phenos more even canopies,  What you described is just excessive topping or manifolding as some call it:cheers:

"Super-cropping" refers to both of those different methods?

Seems like two totally different things to me  . One is causing damage to the stem and the idea is that it'll create a more robust xylem/phloem after it has healed. The other method is simply topping a plant which creates more "tops"/budsites. I've never heard of both of those techniques referred to as "super-cropping"....?...

Or is "super-cropping" just a generic blanket-term that covers many different types of techniques that increase the yield?

Oh shit good catch!! My bad haha

Manifolding is where you create multiple budsites

Super cropping is when you bend the stem over to create bigger buds and a more robust/sturdy base
