Dehydration times

So my first little batch was ready to harvest. I want to buy a nice dehydrator but for the time being I spent 40 bucks on a presto from walmart. All went well and I ended up with 6 grams dried. My issue is that it only took about 3 hours to be absolutely cracker dry. The largest stems on the lot would snap right in two. This seems odd to me considering I hear people here saying that it takes up to 24 hours. Anyone else see very short dry times with small fruits/batches? Being as the yield was so small I only used one tray and the lid, I’m guessing this just made everything hotter since the machine didn’t have to heat a larger volume, idk.

With small fruits and batches, the dry time is quite short. When people say "dry for 24 hours", its typically for large flush harvests. Hope this helps.

The humidity also matters a lot. I have like 12% rh on average and rarely have to run them for more than 6 hours.
If they’re huge or solid like PE and I don’t split them open first it can take 14. If you want to be safe when you think they’re done weigh a couple of the biggest ones and then put them back in for an hour or two and weigh them again. If they didn’t lose more weight they were done the first time.

Smaller mushrooms will dry quicker for sure but 3 hours might still be a little too short, even if they cracked when bent. When I first started growing I had this same situation and I had a batch that seemed totally dry after just a few hours but after they sat for a while I noticed they were getting bendy again.
I would let them go a little longer unless they are very small, or at the least just make sure to check them again in a day or two before consigning them to long term storage.

Alternatively, put a few desiccant packets in your storage jars. They'll grab any remaining moisture out of your shrooms.

This was very helpful to me! I also have small batches from my first grow, and after 4 hours at 165F they were totally cracker dry. I was confused by all the posts that say let it run 24hrs but it seemed crazy for such small batches at a time. Thanks you for making this comment

I have the exact same dehydro as you and experienced the same results. I’m only putting in an ounce at a time wet, so they dry super fast, and they are dry ! I even powderized some in my coffee grinder in like 2 sec. I am assuming if you’re doing a couple pounds at a time it will take longer, or if the fruits are massive

Does your humidifier have a temperature setting? When I set mine at 150 deg F the batch will be cracker dry in 4 hours. If its set to 95 deg F then it takes up to 24 hours to be cracker dry.

No it’s set at 165*F it’s the presto dehydro. No variable setting on it but they dry quick, but again, smaller batches/fruits

Dehydration times depend on the size, thickness, and quantity of the fruits. I run my dehydrator at its maximum heat setting (145F), and it has taken anywhere from 4-12 hrs to get the mushrooms to a cracker dry state.

I just dry them on table. Took 2-4 days in summer. No one cry about potency.
