Cap Splitting

AFOAF has some Treasure Coast's growning and one of the caps is developing splits all the way around the cap. This is the first cap that has done that and none of the others that are growing right now are like that. Any clues on what is causing that?

This can be an indicator of too low humidity. Otherwise it sometimes happens, especially with stems...

The humidity is 99-100% so I don't think that's the problem, thanks for the input.

in my experience:
sometimes it happens to my larger fruits, normally on cakes. whenever i case this also happens to the larger ones, but only if i delay the harvest. i have come to the conclusion that it can be a natural process for larger fruits when left to there own discourse for to long, the smaller ones never seem to have this problem. but then again, ive had large caps do just fine if i wait a day or so when i think they are ready.

Hmm...interesting, this cap isn't very big at all, probably about the width of a nickel

well... i dont think its a concern unless your going for aesthetic values... i guess if you sell them or somthing you want them to look pretty, but my cracked caps have always had the same good effect as the better looking ones.
im thinking its just a genetic fluke...
if you look at any mushrooms in the wild, there will always be a cap or too that has cracked a bit... most people attribute it to dry conditions, and there may be some truth in that, but i couldnt say. i always keep my cases very humid, and it still happens on occasion.

ive found splitting is more of a problem when the substrate itself is low on moisuter content rather than the air of the fruiting chamber - but some strains are more prone to it - tassie as an example...
