Spacer at the bottom of PC

So I got this tiny pressure cooker at a thrift store yesterday. I'm able to just barely fit my quart jars inside of it. I've always beet told you are supposed to have some spacer between the bottom of your jars and the bottom of the PC (I use jar lid rings and a dish cloth)but I wont be able to fit the quart jars in if I do that. Is the spacer absolutely necessary? what are some of the possible consequences if I should choose to try and go without?

You need to prevent the jars from directly touching the bottom of the pressure cooker because direct heat can cause them to crack. If yours came with the removable trivet / round metal platform that alone should be enough. I only raise it further with jar rings when I'm doing small things or spawn bags.

Exactly. If u break your jars, then your grains are ruined. U need that spacer. I use a Dim Sum steamer. Works great.

In the early days i also had a small one, same problem.
I put a little water soaked towel to the ground, and the lid barely fit.
You just have to look out not to cover the vent holes inside.
Never had an issue with it.
Of course some presto will be better

Thanks for all the answers guys, probably sounds dumb but I never thought of the direct heat cracking the jars. In hindsight it seems really obvious. I'm gonna try what goatrider suggested and just go with the dish towel on the bottom and be sure to inspect my jars after each PC to see if any cracks show up.

Dim Sum steamer? you mean you don't PC grains at all just steam them? you get good success? I thought steaming was only for PF tek and all grains needed to be PCed.

Not sure what Logical does with the dim sum steamer, but you can actually sterilize grain effectively by steaming it for 8-12 hour depending on your elevation. Way less efficient than a PC, but it apparently does work.

I believe what he's talking about is using it as a trivet, like how some PC's have a metal inner container instead of just a flat disc.

This is the Dim Sum Steamer: https://m.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Stainless-Steel-Dim-Sum-Vegetable-Seafood-Steam-Basket-Rack-for-Pot-Pan-/191989161559?_mwBanner=1&_rdt=1
Place it at the bottom of your PC to raise your jars off the bottom of the PC, away from the water. U will lose a little space but it worka great as an insert for placing jars on top.
