Best way to make holes in mason jar lids?
    #26805028 - 07/05/20 11:02 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

What is the best way to make holes in the mettle lids of the MJ? I dislike drill ad nail as the result is not a smooth hold and I can scratch myself. I am wondering if anyone came up with a better way.

You dislike drills? Drills make holes. They're really good at it.

Use a step drill. They work a lot better on sheet metal than a regular twist drill.

I use metal hole bits

Getting it the size you want is easy just how many steps you wanna take it. Also works great for plastic as long as your gentle. But these bits are made specifically for metal.

I use a Scratch Awl and a rubber mallet. Works great for small holes!

High quality bits made for metal leave clean holes. I don't used the special shaped ones like the link above. Just regular shaped bits intended for metal. The run a little under $10.

This would be best if I could find one that makes 1/4 inch holes and is able to handle lids. I have not found one. Do you have a suggestion?

U could buy from eBay if u dont have a hardware store with metal bits available.

If u are making 1/4" holes, use a scratch awl and a rubber mallet. Its my favorite new method.

Best? Here you are. Although it can't be used on one-piece lids, it makes the cleanest holes possible.

The best way to make holes is to buy plastic lids

I've seen people use everything from fancy pants drill presses all the way to stabbing the lid with a screwdriver. The sky is the limit here and they all seem to get the job done.

I just take the case of jars unopened and hammer a nail through the lids. They’re packed so tight it makes it easy.

I bought one from Dollar Tree a week ago and it broke 2 holes punched and the 2 holes weren't even complete. I then bought on at Walmart and same result.
