Hey everyone, started 12 gt jars 5 taking off, I assume in another week or two they be ready to fruiting planning on doing a shoebox 6L and planning to use these 5 ~200ml colonized BRFx5 =1l / 3L Coco (Good Ratio?)
Had a quick look thru the search bar and cant really find what im looking for anyone give me any advice on using the Bucket coir tek with ready to use coco? I've got this exact bag unopened https://www.hydroponicxpress.com.au/shop/p-cyco-coco-coir-50l-rhp.html I've seen a gourmet grow mono tub using this exact bag so I assume it will be okay after pasteurization, but when pasteurizing how much water per L should I use per L/kg/gr of coco. Right now im thinking 1L Water to 2L Coco. Anyone have any idea how what radio to start at as I read dry bricks you use about x5 the weight of bricks in water. Cheers
Ps Had a bag of this brand Coco/Perlite 70%/30% before and dumped some in a open tub for seperate reason and about a month later could see what looked like trich, dumped that as soon as i saw it, I know Bucket tek should elim this right?

I'm also newb so take what I say w/ a grain of salt, but as I understand it the bucket tek mainly applies to dehydrated coir bricks
I also had this question since I accidentally purchased loose, hydrated coir (a diff brand) and couldn't figure out why it didn't expand much after putting it in boiling water
Anyway, the amount of water that you want is just enough to reach "field capacity". How much extra water you add would depend on your own specific sample of coir, but that's the goal. You may not need to add any at all if the coir you bought happens to already come at FC. If you're gonna pasteurize it then there may be some water loss when you're done, so you'd need to check the water content after applying heat to it
There are guides on here on figuring out how to achieve field capacity, so I won't elaborate much, but I basically aim for just a few droplets of water coming out of the coir when I squeeze it with one hand
I guess what I'm saying is you will have to eyeball it. The volumes in the bucket TEK and most other coir prep TEKs are specifically for 650g coir bricks. Since you are starting with something quite different you won't be able to rely on any predetermined volume of water (unless you can find a TEK for that specific type of coir you bought). You'll have to slowly add water until, to the best of your judgment, it has reached FC

Ok thanks Im thinking along the same lines, ill do a completely separate thing before spawning jars and mix water with 3L coco until I Hit field cap might heat and check, I do have an idea of field cap and i think id need maybe 0.25-0.5L per L coco as I am quite used to this brand and it takes about 3-5L to fully flush out a 11L pot. Do you recon keeping the coco in some sort of cheesecloth layer would strain off extra water?
Anyway ill sort it out cheers bro.

Sure, you could probably use a cheesecloth to remove excess water, but you may have to strain it out with your hands to really get as close to FC as possible
And yeah, good luck man. I can sympathize, I should have just bought the coco coir brick lol

Haha Alright think I might have to drop by bunnings and grab a spare brick im a little concerned already that Spawn:Sub 1:3 isn't a good idea fora noob, how many 1/2 pint jars colonized for a 650g brick? Tempted to just build a SG FC for them instead of doing math but could i put a 55L SG FC elevated in a clothes closet?
