Why are Guns still Legal
    #2680566 - 05/15/04 01:22 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Besides The constitutional ammendment what is the use or theory behind it.

I've came up with: For Americans to Defend their country incase of an attack, gun owners would come to arms against a terrorist threat.

guns suck... I wish if someone had beef with someone they would just fight them, to the death if nessasary... and now its like drive by shottings are right around the corner... man has warfare and life changed in just 1000 short years.... gunpowder is the devil(well only because it fell into the hands of huma ns and they made it the devil... I am sure it has some useful qualities for something other then killing, or to gain power)

People have a fundamental right to defend themselves. This means against the government as well as against other people. This is why it is foolish to just let the government defend you. The government can become corrupt and tyrannical, and when that happens, people need to have a means of defending themselves against oppression.

I think the psychological effect of an armed populace is what is important. It helps to keep the government in check (especially one that has a well equipped, technologically advanced standing army that is easily capable of putting down rebellion if said government attempts to impose unreasonable laws, etc.). I think it's worth the trade off of all those gun accidents each year (which aren't entirely guns' fault in the first place, but rather stupidity and a non-chalant attitude toward gun safety). Don't shoot the messenger...

EVERYONE has a gun in Switzerland, and they have a much lower rate of gun deaths than the US. It ain't just the guns, dude.

ya, but the guns sure do add to the problem...

and as far as rate goes.. do you mean like number of deaths total, or percent of deaths compared to percent of population? where do you get your information?,, maybe like lower rate of REPORTED deaths.... Switz is known for its mafia action and drug smuggling...

Gun control would be useless anyways. In Japan it works due to the physical constraints of it being an island nation and being able to more easily control the influx of weapons. In America, if you banned guns, only criminals with ties to underground arms dealing would still be able to own them. This scenario puts your average citizen in a situation of total reliance on police and the government.

If you keep your gun unloaded, with the gun separate from the ammunition. The chances of your child accidentally shooting themselves becomes almost nothing.

you are going back to accidental kid shottings... I am reffering to the problem not as that, but all the gang killings and brutal murders each year .... you are right that at THIS point in time, it is best to keep owning a firearm legal.. but that still does not solve any problem...

Gangs would be able to get guns anyway. They have underground connections. It's the people who want to defend themselves against gangs that would be unarmed.

I think instead of trying to control the tool, it is better to try and control the root of the problem. Mainly: poverty and a terrible education system in America. Like I was saying before, gun control won't stop illegal gun dealing which is where most gangsters are going to pick up their weapon. Broad grassroots programs in low income communities is needed for real change to happen, imo. Cracking down on crack, heroin and speed would help too. If the fucking government would lay off of marijuana and ecstacy and focus on the REAL drug problem in America, something might actually get done. You can't just put a band-aid on an infected wound...

Personally, I could care less about gang violence. They mostly target each other, so other than the occasional innocent bystander that gets hit by a stray bullet, it doesn't claim many innocent lives. The gun deaths we need to focus on cracking down on are domestic disputes and accidental gun deaths.

BTW, I disagree with your premise that we need to crack down on crack, heroin, and speed. All drugs should be legal. The government has no business telling anybody what substance they can put in their body.

Hmm, I think gang violence has a huge negative impact on the lives of children though, who are innocent. They get drawn into a lifestyle that no child should have to be part of.

Edit: I think if they are made legal, then they should be by prescription or at least have some type of controlled supply so that people know they are getting 'clean' drugs. Back before they were made illegal, many people used them everyday to cure common ailments and a huge number of people got addicted. So I'm on the fence about this one. Fundamentally I agree that we should all have the right to ingest whatever we want, but many people can't control themselves even when it comes to alcohol.

But the causes are different. And that is what's pertinent to gun control law and its interaction with the gun purchasing populace.

What is your opinion on a way of defense against a tyrannical government then? What's keeping those in power, in check (besides our naive trust)?

Edit: And by 'causes' I meant gun violence too, but who is weilding it is important as well as who would have access under gun control laws.

So would an increase in gun safety. And the fact that a disarmed populace would be unable to defend itself against an oppressive government is too high a cost for any drop in gun deaths. He who would sacrifice his freedom for a little security deserves neither freedom nor security.
