My first oyster project (final pics :))
    #26805357 - 07/05/20 02:03 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

This is the first time I grow oyster mushrooms. Over ten years ago, I tried to grow Shiitake and ended up with a bag of green contaminated woodchips.

This time, I prepared better. I first looked up what's the easiest mushroom to grow and it seems to be oyster mushrooms. Then I found a video on PF Tek and decided to put them into BRF and later directly fruit them from those cakes. I showered, disinfected the shower and inoculated inside there. The BRF jars were in the pressure cooker until I took them out inside the shower. Then I put them into my bedroom where I keep the temperature as low as possible and covered them with a transparent box so that I could see the progress.

When they were completely colonized, I thought it would be better to put them into a bulk substrate and bought some 5 liter (1.3 gallons?) transparent buckets, drilled holes into them.

As a substrate, I used coco coir and vemiculite, because that seemed to be the easiest. I put all into a duck roast pot and baked it in the oven until my bbq thermometer showed an internal temperature of 90°C (about 190°F). After it had cooled down, I filled two buckets with 1.5 jars of my BRF cakes and the cooled down bulk sub. Then I put the small buckets in bigger buckets and closed them with the lid a few millimeters open, put them into the basement and waited.

Yesterday, I relocated the buckets onto my washing machine for fruiting. They seem to grow rapidly and I'm extremely pleased. Hopefully, I can give an update soon and eat some fresh oysters.

Timeline was:
  • 6/4/2020 Prepare BRF
  • 6/5/2020 inoculate with spore syringe
  • 6/21/2020 completely colonized -> into buckets
  • 7/1/2020 mycelium is growing out of the holes
  • 7/4/2020 Small fruit bodies are starting to form
  • today: fruits have 2cm width and one can nearly watch them grow, fruits slowly darken

I thought that the oysters would only fruit when the substrate was completely colonized. But to my surprise, they started to fruit even though the bucket still shows a good deal of black substrate (unlike my jars which were completely white). Is that normal or something to worry about? Should I have kept them darker and given less oxygen?

Now I'm growing lemon oysters in parallel while the first batch is fruiting. Those were done the same but seemed to colonize much slower. I even thought I had done something wrong because I couldn't see any mycelium in the jars until a few days ago. I'll see how that goes and maybe I'll also find out why they took longer to colonize. One reason may be because I used one 5ml syringe to inoculate 4 jars instead of 3 as last time. The one where I injected a visible piece of mushroom mycelium was the fastest to colonize, then the one where I injected more of the liquid. The ones where I was a bit stingy and only injected very little, take the longest (as was expected). But all seem to colonize fine so it was worth it and I gained some small insights.

You need a lot of FAE with oysters so get a fan in the room you are fruiting in you just want the fan moving air around be not blowing on the fruits. If you don't at least get the air moving you will end up with all stipe. Put a plastic bag down and place your bucket on the plastic bag and mist the plastic bag and the bucket this will rais the humidity a little around the mushrooms mist as often as you can.

Thanks for the tips, the mushrooms are growing fine, I now also opened a window in my basement (a small part of it is above the ground) and there is a constant stream of fresh air. I'm not sure about the bag, wouldn't it prevent most of my FAE? I also thought about buying one of those shelves with plastic tent around where I could put my mushrooms. But the FAE problem would be even worse with that because the moisture would probably only stay inside if I close it and don't constantly blow air inside, right?

I hung a damp towel on a string above my buckets and misted about 20 times today (home office advantage is that I can go and look whenever I want, even during phone calls )

You don't put anything in the bag. The bag lays flat on the ground or a table. The plastic is just so the ground or table doesn't soak up the water. I am not sure how much it would even help but it sure wouldn't hurt. You don't want your mushrooms dried out before you even harvest.

Ah ok, now it becomes clear. I currently have them standing on the washing machine which doesn't soak up water. I'll mist the surface as well next time. Thanks for taking the time to help me out

Updated pics of today

And on the back of the bucket, mushrooms are also starting to become bigger

I only found out that I shouldn't have drilled the holes all at the same height. I'm afraid that the clusters will grow together.

Keep an eye on them if you start seeing long stipes growing increase the FAE.

The clusters will grow together for sure. Before you start your next grow. Just use a trash bag as a liner in the bucket and when you are ready to fruit slice holes in the bag where you want your fruits. There will be less cleaning of buckets this way. Just pull the bag out and throw it away.

I still can't figure out what they should look like when they grow out so it is hard for me to see if the stipes are too long for their stage of growth. Currently, they look like this:

Valuable tip, thanks. Do I have to sterilize the liner or rub with alcohol? I'd just use trash bags but I doubt that they wouldn't melt in the pressure cooker.

Those look pretty good but as always with oysters, maybe a little more air wouldn't hurt

:whathesaid:

You can't get to much air with oysters as long you can keep them from drying out.

Thanks, I'll try to increase FAE. So far, moisture isn't a problem. They grow and grow  I look forward to eating my first home-grown mushroom meal soon.

Thanks, I'll try to get more air to them. I'm just a bit hesitant to leave a fan running all the time. Maybe I can relocate the mushrooms nearer to the window to get more air.

Why they look shiny? Do you mist them?

Yes, those have been misted which I would not suggest. It could encourage mold and bacteria. mist the bucket and lay plastic down and mist the plastic. You want humidity around the mushrooms not moisture on them.

Yes, I just gave them a good spray of distilled water. If that encourages bacterial growth, then I'll stick with spraying the bucket and the surroundings. I'm still new to this and learn something new every minute.

I had the feeling that the air was too dry (a lion's mane from a growing kit next to the oysters had turned brown the day before).

Is it worth to invest into an air moisturizer and let that run from time to time? I see one of those repti foggers just cost about 50 bucks new. But with open windows in my basement for FAE, the moisture would be blown away soon after I create it.

How do I create FAE and moisture at the same time if the environment around my house is dry? Or does FAE not necessarily mean "fresh" air but only exchange of air so that I could also just move the existing moist air around in the room?

Were you misting when the lion's mane turned brown? I hear lions mane will turn brown if they get wet. Or it may have been mature and ready to eat.

Lion's mane browning was probably from being dry.  I would agree on not misting lion's mane directly, however - I've never had any problems spraying the shit out of oysters, as often as I can.  They always seemed to like it

I have never had to mist so I would not know. Misting sounds like to much work. So I avoid it. I have never heard of a problem when misting oysters. I just don't like the idea of potentially causing nasties to grow on my food. If I had to mist and I was going to mist the fruit I would at least make sure all the water has dried before misting again. But I still don't like the idea of getting the fruits wet. We all know that is how bacteria and mold starts.

What's the old saying an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

For weaker species that can certainly be an issue.  Oysters and reishi don't give a fuuuuuuuuuck

I just would rather prevent the possibility of nasties than to eat something I am not sure what is growing on it.

I am like that a lot. I often overthink things and that leads to overdoing things.

Bad habits die hard!!

The lion's mane may have cought some of the mist of my oysters but it was fruiting from the back and the front and only the front one turned brown.

I harvested it before it could turn browner. Maybe it'll give me another flush.
