Potential UK Liberty Caps?? Help
    #26805288 - 07/05/20 01:22 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Found in short grass lands near a UK town, field of grass covered in little brownish mushrooms like this, have a nipple shape at the top with dark brown spores and pale stems. Working on getting the spore prints as we speak. Pictures are attached and can describe them better than I can please let me know if they’re Libertys or something that just looks similar. Thanks

No, it's a panaeolus sp. Definitely not psilocybe semilanceata.

Don’t know what the weather is like where you are but it is still a bit early to be finding libs. I have heard of people finding them in June/July though I’d expect the weather was quite cold and rainy. Here is a decent article about identifying liberty caps with some pics about common look-alikes: http://fungiflora.com/2017/10/16/psilocybe-semilanceata-lookalikes/

My one comment on this article is that they don’t mention panaeolus foenisecii (which I think you have a lot of in your pics) that can look a lot like libs and gets misidentified often. The big giveaway there is the spore color—libs should be purple-black and foes are brown. There is a species of active lawn pan (which you might have a few of) with jet black spores though so take prints.

Panaeolus foenesecii. There's no nipples on these. No need to go looking for liberty caps until August.
