Best way to make holes in mason jar lids?

What is the best way to make holes in the mettle lids of the MJ? I dislike drill ad nail as the result is not a smooth hold and I can scratch myself. I am wondering if anyone came up with a better way.

You dislike drills? Drills make holes. They're really good at it.

Use a step drill. They work a lot better on sheet metal than a regular twist drill.

I use metal hole bits https://www.harborfreight.com/2-piece-titanium-nitride-coated-high-speed-steel-step-drills-96275.html Getting it the size you want is easy just how many steps you wanna take it. Also works great for plastic as long as your gentle. But these bits are made specifically for metal.

High quality bits made for metal leave clean holes. I don't used the special shaped ones like the link above. Just regular shaped bits intended for metal. The run a little under $10.

This would be best if I could find one that makes 1/4 inch holes and is able to handle lids. I have not found one. Do you have a suggestion?

U could buy from eBay if u dont have a hardware store with metal bits available.
If u are making 1/4" holes, use a scratch awl and a rubber mallet. Its my favorite new method.

Best? Here you are. Although it can't be used on one-piece lids, it makes the cleanest holes possible.

I've seen people use everything from fancy pants drill presses all the way to stabbing the lid with a screwdriver. The sky is the limit here and they all seem to get the job done.

I just take the case of jars unopened and hammer a nail through the lids. They’re packed so tight it makes it easy.

I bought one from Dollar Tree a week ago and it broke 2 holes punched and the 2 holes weren't even complete. I then bought on at Walmart and same result.

I will check out DG. How much does it cost there? the other issue with hole puncher is that I have not seen one that will do a hold in the middle of the lid.
The other night I went a different route. I picked up white plastic lids from Walmart (8@2.99). I make 5 holes in them easily using a soldering iron. In the center hole I put a syringe filter glued with hi-temp silicone (for GE). In the holes I put silicone (self healing injection port). Now the white lids say that they are not meant for canning. I sterilized 24 lit jars and they seem to have done ok. I will be injecting some later today.

I just use a nail to make a hole and then stick a file from my swiss army knife in it and start twisting and grinding until it's the right size. The top side is nice and smooth.

Yea my whiteney jr no 5 was made in the 1930s I think. I bought it on ebay more as a cool collector thing because it came in this sick metal box with faded yellow instructions and price list and stuff it's really cool I actually don't use it for anything lol. Since I don't make jars anymore and my LC lids are one piece it's not useful to me.

For people that use tyvek or sfd for the ge holes, I switched from one hole in the middle to two or three much smaller ones in a triangle.
Reason being I was getting tons of millet and milo coming through the hole and getting stuck between the lid and filter during shaking. I was just holding my finger over the hole while I shook but when I made new lids decided to go with holes too small for grain to fit through.

Personally I hate two piece metal lids and I’ve done so well with unmodded lids that’s all I use now. Buy em and use em. Easy.

Unmodded? I made the switch to plastic a couple years ago and man that really makes the inoculations simpler. No more taking off rings and having to hold the lid in place while you do it. Drilling them is simple too and you can do it just by twisting a knife.

Read the tek. Also jars only need GE not FAE. FAE in jars would dry them out.

Curious here, I have never allowed GE on jars and they've all been fine (and even the ones that didn't pan out/germ had no gas to escape after pulling the tape off, so nothing wanted to escape it would seem.)
Am I the crazy one here? Is this a strain-specific thing?

That's a really good point, I am wondering if I should test this on some half pint jars to see how much GE happens about halfway through colonizing them.
