(De)hydration during a trip

Whenever I trip I begin to dry up, a process which I have began to refer to as "raisining" since it really feels like all the juices from my body get sucked out and what is left is sort of concentrated version. For example my eyes dry up, my mouth and throat dry up and sort of even get sticky like pulling apart papers that are covered in half dried glue... and no amount of liquids that I consume does anything to it other than making it progress slower. Creamy foods such as yoghurt do help with that nasty feeling in the mouth but only provide temporary relief and there's only so much I can drink before the stomach is full.

I drink over a liter of juice and water during a typical trip, which seems to mostly stay in the gut and isn't really absorbed into the body at first. During second half of the trip I will begin to pee it out, and then it keeps on coming as the kindeys seem to do their best to get rid of the newly introduced fun materials from the body, requiring me to drink more to regain the lost liquids in order to prevent a hangover that would otherwise begin to quickly happen from resulting dehydration.

This even prevents sleep as I go to the toilet every 20...30 minutes and let out a full bladder each time, it is quite taxing and it takes effort to balance intake of new liquid while not overdoing it and contributing to the excretion problem but without doing so I will have a major hangover developing which will be most uncomfortable the next day... I also need to pay attention to the electrolytes etc. since I'll bee peeing a lot of those out too and that will also contribute to a bad hangover, mineral water seems to work here and also consumption of proper food.

My friends who trip with me using same mushrooms etc. do not seem to experience any of this, or certainly nowhere near the level I am...

For my eyes I have found a solution, which are gel based eye drops that form a protective hours long lasting layer on them, completely curing the discomfort that would normally happen from the dryness. I do need to reapply the drops couple more times as I begin to feel the dryness but overall the problem is solved and it also works great with weed that causes me to raisin up aswell, though nowhere near the level of what mushrooms do to me.

Now I wonder if there is anything that can be used to prevent this raisining process from happening ? Just replenishing the lost liquids isn't enough in my case, something that would actually fight the mechanism causing the problem would be necessary but I don't actually know what mechanism is at play or anything that might help and I'm hoping someone from here would be able to shed some light on the matter and perhaps provide solutions :heart:

Dehydration is very common with mushrooms, but what you are describing seems something else, li,e you’re overly sensitive.

I would try to ensure you are well hydrated before you even take the mushrooms, and that you are healthy. Balanced diet, plenty of good sleep, plenty of water.

Mushrooms must be a diuretic, because I always have to go to the toilet a lot; sometimes it even sort of overpowers the trip, in that I get that pissed off not being able to relax into the trip because I’m always conscious my bladder is full. And I will still wake up next day with a headache.

I try to eat something filling after a trip, but to be honest, I do like a glass of wine or two as well! So I’m partly to blame for my next day “hangover”.

If you’re getting to the stage where your stomach is full of water such that you can’t drink anymore nd you still feel thirsty, it’s because the dehydration has gone too far, ie you’re too late! Generally the stomach will empty fluid contents once the volume gets above about 200ml. And whatever you drink will take at least 30 minutes before it starts working on re-lenishing lost fluid.

So only thing I can suggest is to hydrate beforehand. Then take the consequences of going to the toilet a lot. Get yourself a camping bucket / toilet so you don’t need to walk far :thumbup:

EDIT: and cushions to kneel on, because if you’re like me, even though your bladder feels like it’s going to explode, it still takes ages for that first dribble of wee to come out :eek:

I certainly take care to be hydrated beforehand, especially since I know what is to come.

I also consume my mushrooms in a drink. I prepare a tea with amount I desire, strain out the solids and then mix that tea into a pint sized beer glass of sweet juice and then I drink that mix. It helps to keep blood sugar up and otherwise completely masks the taste, and gives me the initial boost of liquids for my body. I do begin to slowly drink more in the coming hour also, so I think I have done all I can to provide the best possible conditions for my body but it does seem something beyond is necessary. Eating and drinking is most enjoyable during an intense trip, the gastronomic adventures are absolutely wonderful ~

Yeah, the first pee is a challenge. It is sort of a ritual to me now that is part of every trip and I have learned to savor the moments I spend on the pot, trying to get that first pee out. Pressing the flush signifies the battle is over and has such great therapeutic feel during a trip hahahahaha.

Treat yourself like a rye berry, have a nice long soak before you trip.  Actually a nice long soak DURING a trip might be a fun experiment....

Shower certainly is great during a trip but actual bath I think will get uncomfortable, unless the temperature is just right and actually stays right. Alas I have no bathtub in this place to try lol

I haven't tried either, but I will have to add it to the list.

I've never had the dehydration problems you describe. I do get thirsty, but I usually have a 2L bottle of water handy, plus some OJ for the come-down.  Then I usually feel just fine.

I dehydrate pretty bad, my friends certainly don't experience it so I'm special on this regard. Alcohol also does similar things to me, and I will pee a lot (and sober up really quickly too) but the effects aren't nearly as bad.

You should certainly try a shower, it is very nice, especially when you try different temperatures ~
