Well fuck me.... I just found out this forum exists!! Seems like gets a fair bit of traffic but fuck all posts.

Anyway, thought I'd start a thread for anyone to post hunting related pics. Recent kills, guns, gear, whatever you like. General chat too.

I'll start it off with a 7 point I got yesterday. Unfortunately shrapnel somehow ruptured his bowel, so I was only able to take the front legs, backstraps, head and neck. It was a devastating waste, but it is what it is.

I don't take my phone on hikes, so I only have a back at camp shot.

Ima try and revive this sub-forum, any help will be appreciated.

It's a Fallow deer. Probably the most common type in this part of SA. I must have seen 20 the following evening. I'm going to do some recon myself this weekend with my kids, and hopefully drop one the following weekend.

Good luck with the Elk dude. We don't have them here. They look massive! What calibre do you use for those big fuckers?

My eldest two are both 12, and to be fair it takes some convincing to drag them away from a warm house with an xbox's and into the rain to walk hills. They enjoy getting out when they do.

My 5 year old is keeeen as fuck, but not really upto the steep hills yet. I might drag him out in a few weeks just for a fun hike. Teach him to stalk and keep quiet.

For eating we have Deer, goats, pigs, Kangaroos, rabbits/hares, duck and quail. I knock off the feral cats and foxes whenever I see them too, because they fuck shit up.

What's in your neck of the woods?

They say we have 6 species of deer here, but I've only ever seen Fallow and Red. Fuck knows what the other ones are.

Roo's delicious. Very lean and dark. I eat it at least once a week. Most people fuck up the cooking and don't like it, and it leaves a particular smell on your pan if you leave it laying around for a while after you've finished cooking, so that can put people off too. There's sooooo fucking many of them, I just don't understand why more people don't eat them.

It's a few hours drive for pigs and goats so it's a rare thing for me.

I'd love to try some of what you have on the menu over there. Bear and cougar sound so exotic to me.

That's where most people fuck up roo, it actually needs to be cooked fast and searingly hot. The key to deliciousness is in the prep. A long soak in a light marinade and a sharp and deep meat tenderizer make it pop.

Now of course you can low and slow a stew in a durry oven, and it'll come out like beef, but you can't beat a good old roo steak.

Thanks for the offer mate. Can't see the covid travel restrictions lifting for a few years at least, so I'll just shelf that one

It's usually more of a short list of available ingredients than a recipe  never anything fancy.

For example me and my best mate are currently hooked on cooking roo steak (just using a blandish marinade he gets from the butcher). Then frying damper rolls on the same hotplate over the fire doused in garlic olive oil.

So basic, so fucking good.

What do you do with your elk meat?

A mate of mine gave me his dad industrial mincer. I haven't used it yet. Roo makes shitty sausages imo.

I'm keen to do some deer snags. I'm just not really sure how to do it right. I guess you'd mix in some lamb for fat content? Any thoughts?

I ended up taking four kids with me. Two of mine and two of an old friends. We didn't get a deer, but spotted a few on neighbouring properties.

I hadn't organised anything for tea, so I dropped a roo on the way out and we had grilled backstrap and chips for tea. Just made a rub with various herbs, dried garlic, salt, pepper and left it soak in olive oil for an hour before I cooked it.

I fucking nailed the cooking too, it was so tender. I barely got any because the kids were demolishing it as I sliced it up.

Snagged a Fallow spiker today. It's a really clean beast. Backpacking it out wrecked me, but I'm positive that shit makes the meat taste 20% better.

There's no season for deer anywhere in Australia. There considered feral, so you can take as many as you want, as often as you want.

Surprisingly, not many people in this part of South Aus hunt deer. They don't allow hunting on public land, so you need to own or know someone that owns the land. I shot that one on my parents property.

Went out with the lads Friday night. I ended up getting a 4 point Fallow at dawn on Saturday morning. I'm stoked to have shit loads of meat, but sad I won't be back out for a while.

Me on the left.

You'd think that, but we're a family of 5 and my missus and kids like variety. Wild lamb, chicken and beef are hard to come by...

I just cooked the nicest slabs of venison backstrap I've ever eaten and it's all thanks to this bit of kit. This thing has to be the best meat tenderiser money can buy. Do yourself a favour and buy one!!

Shit, that sucks about the fires. I haven't been able to gauge the size and severity of them from the few news stories I've seen. Are they close to you?

We had real bad fires last year in Aus. Massive out of control fires will really fuck up an ecosystem for a good while.

Stay safe and help out people that get fucked over by the flames.

Made some venison jerky last night with a mate. My favourite was Moroccan spice with maple syrup (that watermelonmon gave me when visited from Canada). There was a bunch of other shit in there, but that was the main flavor. That recipe is a keeper.

Starting to run low on Venison, so I went out for another deer hunt Friday/Saturday.  We were right on their ass all morning, but didn't even catch a glimpse.

We thought we'd try something different and cook a rabbit over the fire.... I had pretty low expectations. It was as ordinary as I expected. Kind of like overcooked chicken. The taste was nice. Just chewy. I think rabbits will be stew only thing from now on.

With headshots... or head removal shots. Rabbit hunting with a .270 requires precision for sure. We cooked two. Two others I shot were turned to paste.

We only cooked them because we decided to stay Saturday night and only took enough food for Friday night and Saturday lunch.

I'll check out those recipes for sure. There's no shortage of rabbits there. One of the warrens is so big it's clearly visible from Google earth.

C'mon lads, we're running out of 2020.

Pics from the weekend. A nice little Fallow doe. Taken by head shot at 5:30am. It kinda sucks because we only set off at 5am.
