I like to think that powerful art is an expression of the animus.

Yeah, van gogh had such a massive ego, people could never get him to shut up about how awesome he was, probably why he killed himself is that massive ego he had. And you know John Lennon, everything he ever wrote was just about him and how awesome he was. All "me me me" "I me my" all the time that guy. Sooo egotistical.

Wow, it's so cool that you were able to reduce the entirety of music and writing and painting and film down to just ego, what a revelation. I had no idea, but it's all so simple now.

Art is the expression of ego yes, but it's not necessarily egotistical. The only time art was not an expression of ego would be if someone unconsciously did some art, hence they didn't consciously do it. Are you arguing op that art is a bad, egotistical thing? What's the point here... Ego is a term understood differently, but psychologically speaking it is just the conscious self, the "me" and "you". It is understood also to mean a sort of pride and esteem of oneself that can get too much, which is also true.

Art is fun. Art is pain, love, heartbreak, irony, tragedy. Art captures, represents. It exists with a hierarchy of quality with fuzzy criteria. But great art moves us, challenges us. It is inextricably human.

I think a certain level of narcissism or egotism is required of artists, but I think these things exist in us all. There are no saints except those who truly make love to their own hypocrisy. That’s why saints smile and laugh so much.

Perhaps most of all, art is psychological projection. What one sees in it or likes, it didn’t like, is a reflection of oneself to large degree.

True imagination is beyond the ego. It has been associated with god. If that’s true then those artists who participate and pull from that fount of novelty and create something that has beauty , those would ones would be considered the natural modernday priests. I agree there also needs to be a healthy staying confidence in the project at hand which could be seen as egotistical or just part of the process.
But lots of art is often collaborative anyways so in those cases there would be little ego if any I would think.

Art is expression of emotion through the senses. Paintings, abstract (especially abstract) or representational, are visual depictions of emotion felt while painting. Music is the auditory version. Acting, poetry, writing, anything. Life is art. Art is life.
