How tight do you pack down bulk sub?
    #26802632 - 07/04/20 01:30 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

In my mind packing it down allows for better contact and so faster colonization? But then I forgot to think of air flow so the mycelium can breath...

I work with coir. So I only pack it on the edges as it helps prevent sidepins. Other than that I dont pack coir, I just really mix it well with the spawn grain and then spread it equally in the shoebox/tub and thn give it a good mist (I prepare my coir slightly under field capacity). Depth is good for shrooms so why pack it?

If you really want your myc to "breathe", just introduce fruiting conditions at spawning,

I pack coir down a little bit. I find it helps keep areas from sinking. If its a casing layer, I just lightly sprinkle on top, never pack down.

Yeah I pack the edges super tight but then level and pat the middle flat.

I pack it all down semi-hard. All way around and in the center too.
I use CVG. I think it helps with harvesting.  It doesn't rip my sub up so bad the harder I pack.

I've seen someone say
"A little bit"
"Not at all"
"Edges super tight"
"Semi-hard"

Good luck OP. See the problems with asking people what an orange taste like. You have to learn for yourself. Try stuff.

I top-dressed gypsum on soil a few days ago and after I ran it through with water, a day later it turned into fucking cement on top of the soil  :undecided:

I just recently and still am going through something like this, you can check out my thread here. The couple of shoeboxes I've done I only packed the edges down. However, I have two different varieties going right now, Burma and RW. When I spawned the Burma two weeks ago, I used 2 quarts of spawn, and mixed with my bulk sub it came out to be a lot in my shoebox. I like to make my substrate depth between 2 and 3 inches depending on the height of the tub because other brands of shoebox tubs differ in dimensions, that way I can give it some proper growing room. Well I spawned it to a smaller type shoebox, and it almost filled it up 3/4 of the way at about 4 inches, so I ended up having to pack and compress the whole thing down to get it down about an inch. I have 3 pins that have popped up so far, but I'm not really happy with the colonization of it. Could be a placebo type effect, I'm also OCD on these things, but it seemed like it took awhile to fully colonize the substrate, and I feel like I didn't even end up with even decent or okay knotting, and only have 3 pins.

My RW I actually spawned yesterday morning so it's only been 24 hours. However, I did not spawn it the same way because I didn't want to have to go through the back and forth of worrying and analyzing if compressing and packing the substrate had a negative effect. I still used the same amount of spawn, two quarts of RW, but this time I did not pack a single thing down, I left it all loose and airy. All I did was mix it up thoroughly, left it all light and fluffy, added a light top layer of left over bulk substrate, and leveled it off totally nice and flat. I didn't even pack the sides how I usually did before, honestly I really should of done at least that much, but I thought this would be the best way for this one, plus I can do my own comparative analysis on how both varieties of shoeboxes came out. Again, if you want to check out the thread, it's here I started a week ago called "problems from compression?".

I never heard of top dressing with gypsum. Follow a trusted easy tek. I recommend Bodhi's. He has an easy tek for pretty much everything.

How much shrinkage have you had? PF tek you should lightly hit bottom of jar on counter to settle.

So much this. Do first then ask questions. Also take all advice with a grain of salt, most veterans have preferences which may or may not become your preference later.

Yeah I’ve always used most of the stuff I read here as a baseline and experiment from there. Even if you get less than stellar results you get the experience and know what myc looks like in those conditions making it easier to read tubs in the future.
