Has anyone been successful fruiting this species indoors? Does it form conks like reishi or caps like a cube? Hard to tell from the photos on the web. 1/7
5/16
5/20
5/21
5/28
5/24 sclerotium 3x1x1/2 inch

Those forming in the pics from 5/28 above left aborted after beginning to form a 1/8 inch conch like a reishi. This is the second bag seen above 5/28 right... 2July

What did you use for the second substrate? It looks like potting soil.
Would love to know what you've done so far. Getting it to form sclerotia is supposed to be difficult, so you're doing something right!

One pint grain spawn to 2 pints pasteurized coir:gypsum:lime 95:5:1 Sealed in a 0.2u bag until primordia form (2-3 months) then open the bag and rinse with well water, refold but don't seal the bag.

Nice that it formed a sclerotium! That's the hard part, from what I read online. Curious to see if it will fruit for you

Nothing more happened than you see above, the bags eventually went moldy.

Trying again this time double the grain.
I'm tempted to lay the bag on it's side...

So cool, never seen this species before. Where did you get your culture and what made you want to cultivate it?

The culture came from The Mycelium Emporium dot com. There was a group buy and I picked this species because I'd never seen anyone here cultivate it. Thought I might be able to add some new to the knowledge base.

Looks good. Kind of a slow grower..
If you try this again will you use some bran? im surpised at the difference in growth between 1 pint of spawn and 2.

Because this is just pasteurized coir I hadn't planned on supplementation. I have tried my regular gourmet sub (20 % alfalfa HWP) which it colonizes but doesn't fruit. It seems to fruit from the tissue surrounding the spawn grains so next run I intend to leave the spawn in chunks. That is, after I recover the culture from these fruit...my master culture froze and seems to have expired.

hmm almost like a grain spawn tuber. Have you left the grains sitting long enough to form sclerotia?
sucks about your culture. usually my mistake is the fridge goes out when im not paying attention and everything sits at room temp for days/weeks. luckily you have lots of fruiting body to get a sample from.

Terminated the double spawn block due to mold.

I was able to recover the culture and have two pints of oats running for the next experiment.
I haven't seen anything that looks like a sclerotium to me but there are 1/8 inch thick plaques and nobs between the bag and sub that could be them.

Finally decided to tear open the sub and this sclerotium is the only trace of myc remaining from the two pints.

edit. the bag has been outdoors with the top open and a drain hole in the bottom for the last 4 months.
