KSSS ready to harvest? Also bottom pins

Hey all! I think I finally have my first successful shoebox grow, done with Koh Samui Super Strain spores. Check out these pics. My question is, it looks like on some of the larger fruits the veils have broken and I think should be harvested...it's just that these aren't that big and I wanted to be sure I was picking them at the right time. Is this particular strain known for smaller sized fruits? So, to pick them or not to pick them at this time? Also, I'm having pretty aggressive pinning on the bottom of the box (see last two pics)..what should I do about that? Just let them be? Pick them out? Flip the whole substrate over? Any advice is much appreciated, thank you!

Looking tasty!
I also just started a KSSS grow. From what I've read, this strain is heavy producer but they're usually more fat and meaty compared to tall. They're definitely not known for having smaller fruits (by weight).
Did you go straight from a MS syringe? I think smaller fruits are pretty common when doing that.
If the veils are broken, they won't get much bigger. No sense in leaving them to try to get more size out of them.
The bottom pins can definitely be picked and eaten, but I have no suggestion on how to easily do that. There must be light getting in through the bottom. I'm not sure why nobody paints the bottom of their shoeboxes like many do with monotubs. Maybe someone will chime in with an explanation
Check this thread out. She goes over how to optimize surface conditions which will make your myc prefer to send fruits toward the surface. It might be worth getting some tips from. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26009662

They look healthy. If veils break then i would pick them and clone your best one. I would clone from the largest and that cluster in pic 2. If you clone the clusters you will have a higher chance of clusters is what I heard.

Awesome, thank you. So I took those pictures last night and went to harvest this morning, and they were all black from dumping spores all night! Should have harvested right after I took the pictures, looks like that was the peak time. Oh well live and learn. Do you think the ones I harvested are okay? I rinsed them under water to get some of the spores off of them, and they are drying now. Also the mycelium bed in the shoebox is covered with them - will that affect the next flush from this box?
And to answer your question, yes I injected from a spore syringe into jars of rye berries (which took like 2 months to fully colonize) and then spawned them into a manure based substrate, then used bod's tek with the plastic bag on top with holes poked through the top. I've never experimented with agar before, is that really the best way to do things? Suppose I'll try that next!
Interestingly, I have two other shoeboxes of the same that have been in a closet under a 12 / 12 artificial LED light cycle, and so far the pinning process has been much slower than the first one, which I left in a room with ambient sunlight. Seems they liked those conditions way better, IMO. Thanks also for the link - very helpful!

Thank you for the reply - see my above note about the spores that dumped the next day! I've never cloned from a mushroom before, is that difficult, does it really work? Seems really cool. Man I'm learning a lot from this site. Still only feels like I've scratched the surface.

Dumped spores are of no concern whatsoever. You could have even waited another week to harvest if you wanted. A lot of people agree that harvesting right before the veil breaks is best. But with bulk grows, you usually harvest all at the same time, so some blackness is inevitable if you're maximizing your flush.
Don't worry about the spores on the substrate, no need to try to remove them.
Definitely read up on agar. It's a way to assure clean mycelium, as spore syringes are always at least slightly contaminated. Ideally what you want to do is clone some of your good looking fruits from subsequent flushes in that shoebox. Then you can grow them on agar and clean them of contams. Then you'll inoculate grain jars with the agar and start a new grow from there. No need to buy another syringe.
Here are some good write-ups:

Turned out awesome! I micro dosed these guys and boy did it increase my productivity and lower my depression over the weekend, along with helping me avoid alcohol. I noticed this strain is a little speedier than others, and in the research I've done, that fits. Will do a full trip (~5g dried) this weekend and report back. I'm looking to experience something like ego death and put a dent in my "major depressive disorder" as well as quit drinking. So far so good! -thelubbelow

Thanks Doob for the info! Super appreciate it. On a separate note, I got my first monsters (for me, anyway!) from the second shoebox, check this out!
