My grain bags smell like playdough.
    #26802198 - 07/03/20 08:04 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I inoculated some properly hydrated millet bags at 10PSI (two bags for 3hrs, two bags for 4 hours) with spore syringes. Used pretty much a whole syringe per bag. Kept them at 82F. Its day 5, there is no visible growth or contamination, but they smell like playdough. Some smell somewhat strongly of this, others smell lightly like playdough with a sweet smell (the same sweet hay smell like immediately after they were sterilized). Is this problem? Should I scrap the batch?

Yeah that doesn’t sound good. Pics might help.

They look totally normal.  Properly hydrated millet bags, falls like sand when rotated, no standing water in the bottom.  About a quart in volume per bag, maybe a tad less.  3-4 cups.

Do you think I should toss the bags and start over?

I don’t know, I don’t usually worry about smells since I don’t have much sense of smell myself. Play doh isn’t something we usually warn people about. But a pic could tell me if something was off. Most of the time if you can smell a contam it means the infection is widespread.

Well the grain is a little over hydrated but not terrible. I don’t see anything super bad yet. I guess all you can do is wait and see what comes up. Millet does have an odd smell compared to wheat or rye but I barely notice any smells from grain.

In the meantime if you crave more control over the grow process I suggest you quit using hack methods like spores to your grain bags. If you have the ability to run grain you can definitely do agar. Large grain bags do best when inoculated with live culture.

Yeah, think I should start preping some agar plates if this doesn't work out.  Do you have any recommendations for good quality agar mix?  I've heard that some comes with an antimicrobial or other additives to make it better.

Also, I had some vermiculite in the cooler to bring the humidity up from 50% to 80%.  Do you think this is a good idea?

I think you should follow a proven tek. Vermiculite sucks as a way to humidify a chamber like a SGFC. You’re all over the map. Read this a few times. All the links in it are proven teks.

Thanks, this is helpful.  So I'm going to try the agar plates.  First I'm going to sterilize those in the oven at 350 for 45 min because I have glass plates.  Then I'm going to cook a liter of malt agar in a glass bottle at 10 psi.  Do you think 1 hr would be enough?  The instructions say to avoid overheating because that softens the agar.  Is 1hr too long?  What are your thoughts?

You need to reread the teks he linked. They tell you how long to pressure cook. 15 psi for 20 minutes is what I do.

Your bottle should be a mixture of agar, some type of nutrient (i use light malt extract) and water.

Yeah I know, but my pressure cooker only goes up to 10 PSI.  I'm sure it would work with additional time, I just don't know how much time is necissary.  This tek says that just steaming it for 20 minutes is fine but he also used an antibiotic.
