Intel's new route: Gigahertz war finally coming to an end

The gigahertz battle is official laid to rest. No more shall gigahertz be a measure of performance! Intel's newest processor, (released a few days ago) the Pentium-M Dothan, runs at 2.0GHz (and 90nm chips), but is much more efficient than a Pentium 4 2.0GHz. Unfortunately, it will cost around $750, but features a large 2MB L2 Cache. This replaces the old Pentium-M techonology, codenamed Banias. Intel is taking the AMD route with the burial of JayHawk and Tejas, and not solely on pure clock speeds. Supposedly, the new Pentium V processor will be Nehalem, which will be based on a brand new architecture (supposedly a mix between mobile processors and something undecided yet). Tejas and Jayhawk were scrapped because they still have old architecture (Prescott core). You can read about the Dothan here: http://www20.tomshardware.com/mobile/20040510/

Clock speed has never been a true measure of performance... it has always been a marketing gimick.

Intel sure does come out with lots of different processors.

And none of this will matter at all once they develop photon processors.

Actually, AMD has a lot of trump cards under its sleeve. Look at the release of the A64; with that, AMD took away the crown from Intel. AMD also has some new processors we have yet to see. Nonetheless, Intel will continue to rule the mobile-processor market with two words: battery life. Compare Centrino's power of 6+ battery life to Athlon XP-Mobile's 2 hours.

eh isnt the centrino the processor used in the sony viao? My dad has one of those, and shit it says the battery life is long but in practice its crap ?
also, how is AMD so well off if intel has the hyperthreading stuff under its sleeve

Tell me more about photon procesors. Do you have any good articles? When will they become reality.?

Centrino is not limited only to Sony Vaios.
I used to have a Sony Z1RA... and yes on Maximum Battery Life I got around 5+ hours. Of course if you set everything its maximum power consumption, your battery life is going to be a lot shorter.
So? AMD64 won over users. Hyperthreading just means "two" CPU's instead of one. It's more a luxury than anything else, imo.

Now THAT'S a step in the right direction! An L2 cache that large will go a long ways towards improving performance. As for AMD, well, I wouldn't count them out just yet.

Where can I find a laptop with this dothan processor in it? I want to buy one tomorow. And what exactly is hyperthreading? I know about strained silicon, do they actually use strained silicon technology yet? And what is the deal with these Pentium 4 extreme edition processors? Would someone please answer these questions? And does anyone have anymore information on photon processors?
