Never been to DC and if I ever go for the Smithsonian or something I'm taking a train.

The state's roads were largely built over old horse and buggy routes and it shows. Wasn't made for automobiles, much less the numbers.

Agreed.

Westmoreland has a paper mill and the whole town smells like wet burning trash. It's awful.

But that's okay. Only black people live there :cookiemonster:

Oh snap Virginia. Finally. But now I've been outta there.

NoVA/DC traffic was voted worse in the whole country for awhile there. Probably still is. Whenever we go back to visit, I instantly cringe and anxiety rises. I'm not used to driving there anymore haha. I was so used to the traffic and dumb drivers it wouldn't even phase me but now I'm so used to the driving in the mountains.

Also when visiting DC, Cookies, stop at the Springfield exit and hop on the train/metro station from there. You're always going to be in traffic around the area, but it's easier not to get lost and end up at the wrong place in DC in your car. I've been to the Smithsonian millions of times and still always love it. Always makes me feel like a kid haha.

My family is from VA Beach and Roanoke. VA Beach has its perks and also some trashy areas of course. Roanoke is beautiful but not sure what the climate is like over there. Prob just the normal Appalachian type feel.

And this is what people mean when they talk about systemic racism.

You could snuff out all the living racism and the problems with systemic racism would still be there. Unfortunately.

In appalachia you can see black towns from people that were fleeing the deeper south or trying to get to the industrial north and never quite made it there. It's crumbling like most appalachian towns but it's shocking to me how even in some of the most desperate of places black people still got shoved in the very worst of that lot.

What was once apparently coal mine corporation owned housing was just... left. Left on the sides of fucking mountains shoved together on the 12 feet of semi horizontal land they could find. Left together to be patched like shacks.

I think situations like that don't help the racism in the rural south. Like.... you fucking made cliff dwellers out of them.

I mean all of the coal mine belt poverty is appalling but when you apply a few hundred years of systemic racism on top of that it looks... like fucking north korea or some shit.

Oh I'd still get lost in my car

DC traffic has such infamy I won't touch it. I'll drive 100 miles out of my way if I want to get to something on the other side cuz... just that much of fuck that.

I do hope to see the smithsonian one day though :sadyes:

VA beach is not one of the nicer beaches I've been to but it's still a beach town and offers pretty much all you could want of that. I really hate that all the public areas has boardwalk though. Dunno whose idea that was.

You don't want to hear about how Jackson probably got that nickname because he was a narcoleptic and asleep on top of his horse during the battle and history probably misinterpreted that because the officer that gave him that nickname was killed that battle?

That's unfortunate.
