First Time Golden Teacher - A Bit On The Thin Side?
    #26799724 - 07/02/20 03:55 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hey guys

Completely new to mycology trying shoebox tek on my first go. I've put one jar of Golden teacher substrate in my shoebox and although I looked a couple of days ago there was nothing. I've just looked now snd there are mushrooms growing. They ared a bit on the thin side. I wandered if anyone could tell me why they are thin? Also when do I know when they are ready to be picked?  Thank you for you help with my grow

Lastly I'm very happy that I've got anything to be honest on my first go 😊

I'd say not enough moisture.
You had a light source?
You harvest when the veils begin to crack under the cap.

What kind of spawn are you using? (oats, WBS, BRF?)

What kind of substrate? (coir, verm?)

What ratio?

Is there a casing layer here?

1. BRF CAKE X 1
2. Coir and Vermiculite
3. 2:1 I believe
4. What is a casing layer?

This was my first grow - I am experimenting at the moment.

I am reading lots but sometimes it's a bit overwhelming.

I am doing shoebox tek - I made the substrate with just enough moisture. However now you mention it I've had my air purifier on in the room and that could have dried them out 🤦‍♂️. Lightsource sun coming through window.

I have looked closer at the grow this morning. The substrate is dry. There is lots of mycelium dotted around the place. Is this ruined now?  Or do you think I should start to mist and fan?

Any advice greatly received for sure

The reason could possibly be the lack of nutrients enough to support a larger flush.
Combined with environmental stress as well

I'd use BRF X 4 you know?

I was following arvin forty-seven shoe box tek on YT. I think I may have messed up the ratio as he works in cups and I'm from the UK. I have had my air purifier on because of my hay fever and I think that dries the air out. Is this grow ruined now?  Or should I leave it?

Lastly I used 1 jar as I was experimenting you see.

People asked for a casing layer, for your surface isn`t colonized.
I also just do shoeboxes, straight coir to spawn, with a little
top layer coco on top to cover exposed grains, as they dry out fast. Just enough to cover, perhaps less than an inch.
For the top layer, i squeeze the hell out of the coco, put it on after leveling
the substrate.
Then i give it a good mist for good saturation and then wait.
As myc peeps through, you`ll see lots of tiny droplets on it.
But just tiny droplets, no standing water.
If not, then you should mist.
No direct sunlight, it`s no good.
And yes, 1 cake isn`t enough. I made one with a half quart spawn,
i got it to work. But it should be more.

When you say coir to spawn do you mean that you just add coir in the shoebox and nothing else?  I'm learning about all thd terminology.

Maybe I put too much coir on top.

When I try again then. Do I put the shoebox which has foil over the top in a dark place?  I've spray painted the sides and bottom of the box to prevent side pinning so at leadt that's dark.

Thanks for your advice

Yes just coir and spawn.
Dark place with foil over is outdated, you don`t need to.
Just set up and place it with some ambient light.

Side pinning is due to microclimate, mushrooms love that.
Mix your tub well, and work out the sides and corners by pressing the substrate against it, but not too hard. I never get any this way.
No painting or lining needed, sidepins don`t mind this.
It`s also better to see, what goes on at the sides/bottom.
Just do 1qt spawn wit the same amount coco, and you`re fine.

It you used one half pint brf cake to a 6qt shoebox then it’s for sure partially a lack of nutrition. I’ve gotten shrooms like that from bacterial spawn too.

If the substrate is dry, try misting it from above letting it fall down like rain.

IDK if your going to get any more shrooms from this one, but next time try some teks from here rather than YT.

Here's a great SHOEBOX TEK

Here's a great SERIES OF TEKS that will link you to every piece of info you will ever need including a tek on how to search for more info.

Good luck!
