Plug spawn to fruiting substrate?

Hey guys, I've got a bag of 100 reishi spawn plugs in my fridge and am ready to use them. I found a relatively fresh maple log near the local mulch pile but am more interested in a sawdust grow. My questions are:
1. Can I just stick a few plugs in some pasteurized sawdust and expect the reishi to fruit from there after it's colonized? 2. Would it be better to stick the plugs in some PF-style cakes and grow some grain spawn?
(Obviously should just do both if feasible) 😙
3. Are spawn plugs only good for logs? (I assume this is no, but I'm a reishi virgin).
Thanks peeps.

It would be optimal to create some sterilized grains, then drop in a single plug, wait for 30% colonization, shake the jar, wait for 100% colonization then use that as a spawn to sawdust.
1) Yes, it will be very slow, which means more time for contaminants to take hold. 2) You could do some smaller cakes as you mentioned, using plugs as a spawn isn't that crazy. 3) They are designed for logs yes, but they are just mycelium in the end, and can be used is all sorts of ways.

Thanks, tmethyl. Update on this experiment, I took your advice and started some with grain and I was pleasantly surprised at how easily reishi mycelium grows.
Documentation: 1. Found a couple small glass jars (like 3/4 cup maybe) without lids 2. Filled jars about 5/6 from top with 50/50 mix popcorn kernels from the early 2010s and hydrated vermiculite 3. Covered jar tops with aluminum foil, still no formal lid 4. Steamed on stove top for ~20 minutes 5. Let cool for ~30 minutes 6. Washed hands 7. Removed foil 8. Buried one colonized dowel plug near the center of each jar 9. Covered with dry layer of verm to top of jar 10. Replaced aluminum foil, fit around top of jar 10. Poked two small holes in each foil covering 11. Left in a dark shoebox in closet
Now, about a week later, the small jars are on their way to full colonization and that means I have some grain spawn
I might scale this up to two or three dowel plugs in a half pint jar, but it's probably not necessary if you're willing to wait a little longer.
Wow these guys are hardy. Makes me feel a lot better about whacking them into my log with a hammer and dripping hot wax over the hole
