Damn these side pins

So my first attempt at shoeboxes wasn’t a total loss. Didn’t get a lot of fruits but damn it if all these side pins would have been on the surface it wouldn’t have been all that bad at all. What will help prevent that the most? Better surface conditions? What about using a liner vs painting the shoebox black? Thanks for any info.

Both. You won't need a liner if your surface conditions are perfect but it will help while you learn to dial things in

Painting the shoebox does nothing. You can tamp down the edges when you spawn your grains to bulk, make sure you maintain good surface conditions.
Side pins have the same effect as top pins, so it's really all the same to me. You'll get better at it with practice.

Yeah, to clarify I was talking about the liner not black paint.

A liner will help prevent side pins from forming but they are not fool proof. Also if you don’t dial in your surface conditions you won’t see a decent top pinset, liner or no liner. I use liners cause they make cleanup at the end a lot easier.

Check out the SFF shoe box tek from ShaperDreaming. That method has been working great for me.
Whenever I see a flush like that it makes me think there’s some bacteria or weak mold or something hanging out. The sub looks fairly healthy but the mushrooms themselves have a minor version of the Trich look.

Yea I have another thread going where I’ve been getting help with the fact that something else is going on. Trich pins? Safe to consume if they mature fully?

Okay so I guess I need to learn what proper surface conditions are. I was away on a 10 day job but upon returning things still seemed humid. What can I try to focus on next run to get better?

Oh yeah. I don't think you have trich though, just that they are starting to get a little of the same look. A little 'grey-ish dry' almost, like not quite as vibrant as normal
