Would these lights be okay for fruiting conditions?
    #26796430 - 07/01/20 07:41 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

So these LED lights I have have two arms each with 20Watts. They have a setting that goes to down to 20% brightness so maybe that would work? I dont want to dry it out the substrate too much. Is it also okay if I fruit the tub in a cluttered room instead of a closet? I just don't want to have to risk having LED's in a tiny closet because of fire hazard. But colonized substrate is pretty resistant to contamination right?

Thank you for reading!! Mush love.

Edit: these are what the lights look like https://imgur.com/3TlyNxt

The whole point of LEDs is that they don't heat up. That means it won't dry out your sub and there is 0 chance of starting a fire in your closet.

What about the 6500k cfl bulbs? Do those heat up/pose a risk of fire in a closet ?

Cfl bulbs run warmer than LED but not as hot as traditional incandescent bulbs. You can use them in a closet, just be smart. Make sure nothing is above it that could fall on it and give it a little ventilation whenever possible. I'd be more worried about raising the closet temp too high for cubes than I would be about starting a fire.

Keep in mind if you're growing cubes, light is helpful because it helps them stand up straight but cubes will grow without it, even in darkness or ambient light.

I'm not knocking lights at all, just sharing what I know

Gotta agree with what you said though, will mostly be only running the bulb when I’m home for supplemental light

Closets tend to cause problems. At least I’ve noticed a trend that way. You’re missing out on the natural air currents you get in larger rooms.

I have this huge exhaust fan in the ceiling in the house I live in so I can run that, leave my room door open, windows open, and closet doors open for plenty of fae and a great cross breeze. It’s pretty sick. Also I have a fan inside my closet

Sweet. Now just be careful of too much air 😂

Pretty much any lighting should be good though, I’ve been using a single 5000k bulb for a few stacks of shoe boxes. I’d use a little better setup for sure with more room but it works.

I've got shoeboxes stacked against the wall in my basement. I just leave the regular light on and its pretty funny they all grow toward it like there's a strong wind pushing them over

Interesting, thats another thing I was wondering. The room is quite messy so Id think closet would be better but probably not, as I have no air filteration. Ive read that colonized substrates are quite resistant to contam so well see.

Wait so mushrooms will just grow towards any regular light bulb? I thought it was just flourescent lights. If so thats cool!

My closet is all wood which is impossible to sanitize, so I lined the inside of my closet and closet floor with contractors plastic so that I can easily wipe down the walls or spray the whole inside of the closet with dish soapy water

So any contaminants that float in from outdoors wont harm the mycelium?

I’m new so maybe wait for other’s opinions but I think there’s always a risk of contamination however I believe if you’re fruiting BRF cakes that are fully colonized, they are much less susceptible to getting contaminated. I imagine trichoderma could travel in the air through your windows though which could be an issue when trying to colonize bulk substrates

Contamination problems happen when you inoculate your grain. If you have clean spawn you really don't need to worry about contaminations, even in a dirty room.

It is my understanding that lights do not promote growth, they guide direction. Shrooms grown in total darkness still get big but they get all bendy and wrinkled and stuff

Remember, sterile conditions and procedures are only necessary when handling uncolonized nutrient substrate. I started growing in a moldy apartment, and mushrooms will fruit just fine in contamination heavy environments, aka everywhere other than a sab or in front of a flow hood. And I realize there are more than just the two sterile environments other than the two I listed but for mycology work its the main ones we have to worry about.

Yeah thats what I had thought, but the chance is probably still there. Maybe its better to just close the windows and use a fan but I have no clue honestly.

Thats interesting. Also makes me feel better about contamination in general.

It's all about clean spawn aurora. Once you have clean colonized grain you're basically golden. Unless you use manure or additives in your coir without properly pasteurizing. But clean grain + coir/verm + decent fruiting conditions = mushrooms
