SameMould that pic with the two subs, one acting like an umbrella is 😍👌🏼
Love it!

Nicko.. just stop it. Your posts are making me crazy. Crazy horny 😂

They’re still out there! Haven’t picked the same as last year (due to more people being out, Rona.....)
But been loving it all the same. The challenge of finding subs where people have already been is great. Don’t get me wrong i do love a good patch with a few hundred waiting 🍄🍄

How the fucking shit are you finding these forest subs now? All of a sudden my few spots are showing zero activity. Any idea what altitude you're finding these at? I normally hunt quite high...

Impressive man

Thanks! :cheers:
Where I normally forage the elevation generally ranges from around 100m to 400m above sea level. Though where I was finding them on Wednesday, the altitude was around 600m.

Long time lurker here..

Thanks all for sharing your knowledge, Shroomery is such a great resource for those of us just starting out who don’t know anyone who knows.  Nickoloxious’ habitat pics and images showing just how diverse subs can be in particular are absolute gold.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a couple of years, last year was pretty casual, just lots of walks in parks and NP’s with my eyes peeled.  This year efforts have intensified, I’ve just about worn out a pair of runners with all the walking, and have been scouting locations weekly.  I live in NW Vic, it gets crazy hot and dry here over summer, and the damp, shady microclimates subs like are few and far between.

Was thrilled to find half a dozen subs near a creek in long grass while Saffy hunting a couple of hours away a couple of months back, the butts are running nicely on cardboard.  After many an enjoyable, but fruitless hunt I’d pretty much decided just to be grateful for the few I was able to find, and to work on bulking up the mycelium over winter and establish an outdoor patch in Spring in an irrigated spot in my yard with a great microclimate.

We had a huge run of really heavy frosts paired with below average rainfall in the first half of June, but the back end of June had been kinder, with reasonable rain and a lack of frosts.  So hoping conditions would be right I headed out yesterday ahead of the school holiday hoards for a looksie.

I’m interested in fungi in general, and I thought I saw a huge Phlebopus marginatus near an embankment through some trees, when I went to check it out I couldn't find it, but I was absolutely chuffed to find four old, waterlogged subs, wasn’t quite so excited by the huge bull roo who faced off, headed back to the track and left him and his girls be.

Another hundred meters along I found a patch of small yellow mushrooms with pale gills.  The shape looked right on the younger ones, but the ones that had opened more seemed to be too domed to be subs.  They didn’t look anything like the more mature bush subs I’d found in grass with that classic thin, long, twisty stipe, deep caramel nipply cap, and dark gills.  I picked one, the veil was right, there were purple spores on the veil remnant on the stalk and the margin, the cap was sticky.  I squeezed the stipe, it took ages to blue, but bugger me it did.  They were such a bright yellow, and the gills were so pale that I still doubted their identity though.

Ended up picking a little over 300g which is sensational, but knowing the location of a healthy, productive patch for future hunts feels even better.

The cap colour did darken after picking to classic sub caramel, and they ended up staining quite blue eventually so I’m comfortable with the ID.

Hope this shroom famine to feast (by my standards anyway 😂😂) story gives anyone not having much luck some hope that the only thing between you and that patch you’ve been searching for is one more try, or maybe one more after that?  Just get out there and keep looking, it’s good for the soul even when you come home with empty pockets.

Finally achieved what I sought out for a very long time this season and found a couple of big forest subs, so much more rewarding after looking for so long for them than stumbling across suburban patches even if they hold a lot more subs.

This is one of the few I found, biggest sub I’ve ever came across

Nice pics Nickoloxious!
Found a few this morning out SW, some were completely frozen. Have to say in all the years I’ve been picking I’ve never actually picked a frozen sub before.

It's awesome how bountiful this season has been for me, compared to all my previous attempts at hunting mushrooms this year by far has been the most fruitfull. Also on the trip side, the most beneficial in terms of the trips both myself and my friends have had from the mushrooms we picked.
I'm glad I decided to rekindle my passion for finding subs this year. They're truly a blessing to humanity.

Over the last few days I've been exploring some new areas and have been pleasantly surprised by the kind of areas and habitats I can find subs in.
Most surprising for me was when I was down near the peninsula area and found a densely mushroomed area covered in trees and small bushes very close to the sand. I never would have imagined mycelium would be present there let alone subs growing there was possible, but I guess that shows the level of understanding I have about mushrooms and their habitats.

It's always the time to learn.

Here are some photos of the habitats and some of the subs I found there.

Just spent a disheartening 5+ hours over the weekend freezing my toes off in wet grass and found nothing. This is my first year hunting and clearly I'm doing something wrong.

I've not been out as far as Dandenong ranges so beginning to think you guys have stripped every nearby park clean already.

My method so far has been go to a public park (big ones with trails) and keep my eyes peeled while walking...I'm guessing that's where I'm going wrong... My very first hunt I found a handful of subs this way so it's all I know.

*Bonus question, sorry if it's the wrong place but can anyone tell me if it's possible to get spore syringes in Australia?

Hey man,
Don’t bother the spore syringe - customs will take it and it’s illegal.

You want a spore print. There seem to be no Aussie vendors (at the moment, but there used to be), so either somebody could trade/gift you a print or you need to order one from an overseas supplier (listed here on Shroomery). I would send you a Cubensis print myself but I’m looking for one too!

Unfortunately many of the suppliers don’t ship to Oz, some that usually do aren’t doing so during the pandemic, and the remainder charge an absolute gut-load for a print + postage ($50 AUD for the print and $30 for the postage), dont take debit/credit, may take a very long time to post (particularly during the pandemic and depending on weather conditions) and use things like “Apple Cash” which we don’t have access to in Australia, or use other payment systems which seem, at least to me, elaborate and difficult to figure out - but understandable given the nature of the product.

It’s a bit disheartening, but I think we have to kind of rely on the kindness of others at this stage and hope that other Aussies could share cubensis prints with us.

BTW pretty much dont bother with a subaeruginosa print unless you are happy to wait 9+ months and to grow them mostly outdoors, which is not necessarily a bad thing - but if youre like me you want to grow indoors whenever you choose and on-demand.

Hope that helps! IM me to discuss further if you like, from one relative noob to another I’m happy to chat :o)

If you do stumble across any more specimens in your hunts, the stem butts are really easy to use to establish mycelium onto cardboard or straight onto wood chips.  I’ve done both recently, minimal effort, no equipment, better than expected results.

Assuming it’s subs you’re looking to play with :smile:

You'll find subs eventually, it takes some persistence. Try to expand your parameter. Look into different habitats, try areas you wouldn't expect to find subs there. I find that helped me the most when I got stuck for a period of time.
Also looking at the different habitat pics posted here and in ID threads really helped me to get an idea as to which habitats seemed to be the best and I'd keep an eye out when driving to places and mark them in my mind and check em out later or sometimes even stop the car and check em out if I have the time, even at night with my phone flash on lol...:grin:
I find the process of hunting subs a form of therapy in itself, I'd ask myself why do I want to find them? and what does it mean to me to find them and eat them, and find that walking and meditating on these thoughts very helpful in removing any anxiety or stress I have about not finding any because the process of looking for them in these usually pleasant natural environments already a transformative experience.
That's me though, hope you find some subs soon, keep looking! :thumbup:

Subs from the morning walk;

The incoming rain should help the more drier ones.
:shroompick:

Found this lone one growing on the edge. Out of the asphalt about ten meters down the road from my driveway;

Picked some fresh samples to eat over the next day or two;

Can safely say I have more than enough stockpiled for the off season and probably several more. gonna stop for at least the rest of this year as its beginning to feel like I'm hoarding them.  :lol:
Will definitely still be taking pictures wherever I see them. :mushroom2:

*Edit missed out on uploading two pics.
