Preventing sidepins..
    #26795697 - 06/30/20 09:47 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Im wondering what steps I can take to reduce side pinning. I know it has to do with surface conditions. However, I’m getting a good amount of surface pins as well, and they all came at the same time. Is it normal to have these? I’m using a ~60quart tub with coir, and lil verm and oat spawn. Does the MS have something to do with it? If it’s genetics, I have some good agar spawn and dishes going right now.

Black trash bags. Looks like this but one instead of two.
I'm doing some side by side testing but you get the point.

It's not genetics. Side pins form because of the microclimate between the tub walls and substrate.

You can use a liner to prevent that microclimate, I used to use thick, 3 mil plastic drop cloth from the paint department. One roll is like 3$ and lines many tubs, and it is strong enough to lift the sub up easy for harvesting.

I stopped using them along time ago and I recommend you don't either. It's a crutch. . You need to learn to dial in your tubs properly, you want conditions on the substrate surface to be preferable so it will pin there.

You might always get some side and bottom pins though. Nothing wrong with that! I have had wall to wall canopy flushes and fruits still  coming up on all sides.
