    #26795122 - 06/30/20 07:56 PM (1 year, 4 months ago)

This is pretty cool. My memory is shot and I frequently find myself looking up how much MEA to use per litre

The germination blends are interesting. Sometimes spores are so stubborn, I'm willing to try anything

Wow, some of these are so much work compared to others.

That butternut squash soup agar sounds delicious though.

I made a few of these including the horse manure agar.  Testing seven different syringes on LME, PDA (PDA is a Philly GT recipe), BRF, a mix of extras, HorsePooH20 and GrainSoakWater agar.

Sterilized in an All American and poured in a SAB.
I'm a noob.  Got no idea what I am doing.

Yes! I've tried the cornmeal germination recipe to great success; I can't stop recommending it to people. I haven't conducted any formal experiments but just anecdotally germination seemed to occur far more quickly. I made 3 germination plates with subtropicalis using a modification to the recipe in this book and 3 with my usual BRF/yeast recipe. The three cornmeal dishes all showed signs of germination within just 2 days while the quickest of the 3 BRF plates germinated in 4 days and the slowest in 8! The same speed was noticed for some APE and a 1 year old mexicana print. Also anecdotally, they (the cornmeal plates) seem a little more prone to contamination but that might just be a coincidence.

I used the following:

10 g cornmeal
1 g dry active yeast
1/4 teaspoon light karo syrup
6 g agar powder

to 500 ml of water.

I'd love for some others to try this out and share their experiences.

The faster cornmeal shows more contams? That makes sense if it works better for germinating.

Yeah, the ones that showed contamination had a far greater variety of contaminant organisms than I usually see when a plate goes bad. The contaminations also showed themselves within the first 12 hours and i saw no additional ones after that.
