Vitamins and supplements 3

Srsly though, if you have a regimen, what is it? I know that bio-availability is ever the issue, so what's the consensus with what's effective, and what's not? Here's what I take everyday :
- fish oil pills - vitamin d - zinc(rona) - b6, b12(not a lot of meat) - magnesium(had a doctor recommend it for helping adhd, in particular - apparently people with adhd also tend to have lower levels of zinc,..I know a lot of you on this site are fellow space cadets) - lions mane mushroom extract - so i like this, but I'm not sure if the extract I use even can like...cross the blood brain barrier lol. Maybe a placebo, ordered some spores to grow my own.
https://www.additudemag.com/slideshows/adhd-supplements-fish-oil-zinc-iron/
Obviously getting the nutrition from food and sources other than pills are ideal, but alas, we do the best we can. Healthy diet and exercise are the pillars.
What do you take? Has anything had a significant kind of effect on your general wellbeing over time?

The western diet often imbalances our nutrient supply and effectively deplete Magnesium. The problem with having low Magnesium is that once it's low in the body, your body will actually reject it through digestion. If you suspect you're lacking Magnesium, take a bath in some magnesium supplement like Epsom salts so that you can absorb it through the skin. After that resume oral supplementation.

Interesting! I've heard about trans dermal absorption, but had no idea magnesium in particular was that difficult to get back up. I've got some epsom salts so I'll give it a try sometime in the immediate future

I should be taking more but atm I just take fish oil capsules, vitamin d, vitamin b and ginko biloba (only 2 or 3 times a week) Been recently thinking about starting to add turmeric as well as lions mane into the mix.

I dont take anything really but I take electrolytes on fasting days, sodium, potassium, magnesium, I heard to stick with magnesium that ends in -ate cause its bio-available unlike stuff like oxide, but its more likely to give you the runs if you over do stuff like sulphate, citrate or glycinate, I drink a homemade electrolyte drink called snake juice and for 2L of water it calls for 1/2 teaspoon of food grade magnesium sulphate, that seems to not cause the runs in most people, you drink the 2L over the day slowly, never chug it, I think that amount has about 250mg IIRC
I also sometimes maybe 3-4 times a week drink eastern white pine tea(pinus strobus), which is loaded with vitamins C & A, I have about 5 trees just a 5 minute walk from my back door

Yeah, I've heard that about it. I have to recheck what form I'm taking because I know some are more effective than others. TMI aside, so far so good lol. Maybe I'll just start doing epsom soaks like once a week. I don't really fast these days because I cycle about 100 hilly miles a week(not counting last week ), but I'd like to try a lighter variation of intermittent fasting..I already usually end up skipping breakfast out of laziness lol. Just gotta stop putting chocolate almond milk in my coffee and tea.
Out of curiousity have you ever had any general panel blood tests done to see if you have any deficiencies? I never fasted all that heavily, I know that there's a right and wrong way to do it - just curious about what kind of effect(potentially positive, even?) it could have on vitamin levels.

never had bloodwork done, but I did do a 42 day fast, consuming nothing but black coffee and electrolytes and according to wikipedia I should have been in the early stages of scurvy, but I felt fine

That's amazing! That's pretty unfathomable. Mad props. For a while I would do two non consecutive days a week where I'd fast, and that seemed to help balance out that desk job lyfe a bit(and i swear, autophagy does fabulous things to my skin). I'd like to get the health benefits of autophagy without hurting myself with the exercise, so I've got to proceed with caution.

yeah long fasts start to get to me mentally but physically I felt fine, like I was hungry the first week or 2, then I felt fine for a couple weeks then I started to get frustrated at not eating the last 2 weeks
for the last month Ive been doing alternate day fasting during the week and eating on a 16:8 intermittent fasting schedule on the weekend, so basically just eating on tue, thur, sat, and sun, mainly just doing it for weight loss, Ive dropped about 10 pounds since I started the ADF schedule

I take 5000 IU of vitamin D a couple times a week in the winter, and occasionally in the summer if there's a long cloudy stretch. I also take a complex B vitamin after drinking, never noticed a real effect except having neon pee.
Otherwise I don't really bother with much. Even back when I was eating a pretty terrible diet, I had a vitamin panel done and everything was as it should be except I was on the lower end with vit D.
For supplements I take ashwaghanda and valerian occasionally if I'm anxious or stressed, both seem extremely mild even at large doses. Lemon balm as well. I take a blend of mushrooms when I feel like I'm getting sick, I believe it's Reishi, Turkey tail, Lion's mane, Chaga, Cordyceps and Maitake. There's a whole variety of researched health benefits that seem promising (though still not 100% convincing), it gives a nice clear headed feeling.
The research on transdermal magnesium is kinda meh, but an epsom salt bath is super relaxing either way

Do you eat a balanced diet, with lots of greens and other colors for vegetables, and different protein sources. If the answer is yes you don't need em unless you're pregnant and your doctor wants on Folate.

Don't take mega doses, more and more studies are showing vitamin supplements to have negative health outcomes (epidemiological studies) but a flintstones chewy a day probably not gonna hurt anything.

I take Omega-3 and Magnesium because I've read that your body actually absorbs and uses them, as opposed to things like multivitamins which you pretty much just piss out in a very neon fashion.
I haven't really noticed any changes since taking them, but I figure I eat a really balanced and disciplined diet combined with lots of exercise; I'll eventually look back and probably notice a night and day difference in overall health.

Or not. Time will tell.

I've seen Canada have biggest population of nonsmokers with lung cancer. It's from the lack of Vitamin D synthesis because the sun isn't close enough all year. Vitamin D is hard to get without supplementing or eating buttloads of mushrooms or fortified milk.
It's hard to overdose on vitamin D but easier than others since it is stored in your liver and fat cells. Along with A E and K.

Don't need fish oil if you eat fish once or twice a week. Even then probably don't need it. Canned oily fish is good for Omegas, like mackerel. Tasty too and cheap. Minerals that are easy to get depleted on AFAIK are iodine, selenium, magnesium, maybe calcium too depending on diet. Vegetarians and vegans will need more like zinc probably. I take a multivitamin like twice a week or something, not every day. Sometimes I eat healthier and more nutrition dense foods and sometimes less, so I just try to compensate in the long run. Vitamin c and d are good to take in the winter at least. Vitamin c is really good for fatigue and if working out a lot bc of the oxidation. Oh yeah and K2 is good for bones and teeth and stuff. IT is often overlooked. I read a little bit of a dental diet book where the author claimed that the loss of K2 in the modern diet causes lots of various dental problems like teeth growing out of line. We used to get more K2 bc more parts of the animal were eaten, like liver and bone broth etc.

Just vitamin d3 these days.

For what?
Funny how vitamins are just now being gotten around to discussion.
Where was this thread months ago, when people were scrambling for info?
I made a lot of posts early on the covid19 thread about supplements and dietary changes that might be beneficial for covid
C specifically for covid. Idk if it works all that well but there is decent evidence for reducing severity of viral infection & it wont hurt. Zinc for mood but also may double as preventative. Vitamin d miiiiight help too but i already took it anyway for a lot of reasons. Good for your hormones, good for your cv system, good for immune system. Magnesium for boosting free test, calming me down, helping me sleep better. Krill oil mostly to slow brain degeneration
