Beginner Psychonaut (Melboune Victoria)
    #26781037 - 06/25/20 02:45 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Hi all,
(Mods: I hope this is ok to post here, it could kind of fit in multiple sub-sections and is a bit rambley  so I thought here worked best. Feel free to move if appropriate)

Had my second official mushroom hunt around Melbourne proper today, and while I didnt find the specific ‘shrooms I was hoping for, I did have a lot fun exploring previously unseen gardens and parks.

Finding plenty of (other) mushrooms - exactly where ya’ll have told us to find them - under and around eucalyptus and pine trees! I think its starting to make sense why they grow there and I’m pretty confident if I’m diligent Ill come across some subs sooner or later. Most of the mushrooms I have seen so far appeared already disturbed, which is either encouraging (I’m on the right track as other hunters were there before me) or upsetting (missing out on potential subs).

With that said, I’m still keen to order and cultivate a different strain of mushroom - I think B+ is meant to be good for beginners from what Ive read here so far, but my goodness... it really isn’t easy. Legal issues aside, the spores can be a little pricey (one long-term recommended vendor from shroomery have a minimum order of x2 prints per customer, which is $50USD or $100AUD alone, not taking into account $35AUD postage).

My understanding is that most vendors dont take debit/credit/paypal etc. Fine, Apple Cash it is. I spend several hours figuring out that that isn’t available to Aussies!

There are so many barriers. It hasn’t put me off yet, as I’m very keen and have even been reading Stamets books on Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World and just feeling excited for whatever comes.

With that said - if any Aussies have any recommendations re spore prints for a B+ or similar, and the easiest way to go about it, and would be happy to PM and reach out to me I would reaaaaallly appreciate it. If somebody offered to send me a print either out of pity or altruism I might actually die :crazy2:

Either way, I know nothing is free and the mushrooms will find me when I’m ready. I’m trying to put the right energy out into the universe and let them speak to me, haha. I feel very zen about it really, and just finding the whole process exciting.

This such a great community of knowledgeable people. Happy to hear thoughts, feedback or whatever from my ramblings above!

Melburnian here. Sometimes they (subs) can be hard to find in the suburbs, especially if weather hasn't been conducive to fruiting as of late. Keep looking, a trip out of Melbourne to forested areas where they grow more prolifically will likely yield results and help you get an eye for what subs look like.

Can't help you on the spore sourcing front as I have never attempted to grow my own (yet). Sorry about that.

When you say B+ i assume you mean P-cubes?
Personally I'd grow subs if i was going to the effort of growing (I understand they are harder to grow but worth it over cubes in my opinion). Having said that p-subs should be very easy to find especially in Melbourne, once you find a few spots you can pick a years supply in a day, 'or so to speak'.

If ya after prints I'll send ya a PM. Happy to trade.

Happy to send some spore prints of Psilocybe Subaeruginosa if needed.
Maybe able able to send a few other prints too.

I haven’t ventured out of the city yet but that’s definitely on the agenda - though from what Ive read it almost seems as though subs are more common in the suburbs than in the forests and such? Well its just the impression I got from reading around but perhaps that’s just because there’s more people living in the city and relying on local parks and such, and then posting about it.

I’m not even sure if B+ refers to “P-cubes” (Is that referring to Psilocybe Cubensis?), Ive just come across posts here and recommendations at some of the vendors to get B+ But if you have other recommendations for a noob I’m open :crazy2: I do have a medical science background so the cultivation side of mushrooms intrigues me. Have been planning on doing; spore print to (home-made) agar to BRF PF-Tek to further cloning/isolation type stuff and see how that goes.

I’m happy to try growing subs, I’m a bit of a green thumb anyway, but also feeling a little less patient with this being a new hobby so really hoping to do a shorter term grow-project. It’s a shame there doesn’t seem to be any shorter term Tek for subs - my understanding is they basically wont fruit for 12 months until after you establish the mycelium. Great for a longer term project.

Really? That would be amazing! That’s very kind of you to offer - seriously above and beyond. I can’t believe how friendly and helpful people on this forum have been. I was hesitant to post and lurked for a while but I’m glad I began posting and sharing. I’ll send you a quick PM if that’s ok

As far as I'm aware there is no viable indoor cultivation tek for p.subs (at least not one where they will fruit year round).

Yeah, after trawling through the Shroomery archive/forums there seems to be very limited success with cultivating subs. With that said, some people have managed to do it though it appears to come down to 2 main factors which differentiate it from other actives; 1) Specific & controlled temperatures, and 2) Non sterile substrate - often with grass or grass seeds and pine needles/cones or similar pine tree materials mixed in.

I'm planning to look into it even further, but yes ... for that reason I'm still mostly interested in cubensis cultivation and propagation for the on-demand side of things, and the subs for more of a seasonal-foraging perspective.

If you do know any Shroomerites who could help with the cubensis printing I'd be forever grateful

Meanwhile my SAB is done, SGFC ditched for the shoebox dub-tub approach, and petri/agar ingredients are in the post. Excited to get the ball rolling :mushroom2:

I know spore syringes are impossible to get into Aus, but I'm fairly sure a spore print would be possible to source from overseas. I'm looking to get into p. cubensis cultivation as well, I contacted sporeworks and they said they are looking into resuming overseas shipping for spore prints soon. Australian customs are incredibly frustrating.

Well yeah it’s possible to get a spore print from overseas but I like I said in my original post it’s enormously prohibitive due to: 1) excessive cost, 2) elaborate payment methods, and 3) delayed and complicated shipping times (particularly during the pandemic), and 4) terrible customer service (so far, in my experience).

Lost faith in the recommended vendors, would rather deal with shroomerites who I trust, are incredibly helpful and am getting to know! :sun:

If its the experience your after OP your quickest way there would be to put on your walking boots and get back out there.

They are abundant right now.

Don't give up on the hunt 2 times is simply not enough.

Yeah for sure, I never said I was giving up! :picard:

Like I said in my original post I really enjoyed getting out and hunting for mushrooms (and edible weeds! Crazy but true haha) and plan to keep doing so even while I’m actively growing. That said I have all of my tools and gear gathering together and about ready to propagate and cultivate  Agar/petri stuff is in the post and starting to arrive from today  :hippie:
