Coir tek help
    #26792256 - 06/29/20 04:25 PM (8 days, 7 hours ago)

I'm about to do the 50/50 coir tek and I dont know how much a "brick" of coir is supposed to weigh. I bout some coir on Amazon and they are 250g bricks is that enough? For the 2 quarts of vermiculite?

The 5050 tek is for 650 grams of coir. 2×(250/650) is how many quarts of verm you'll need too keep the same ratio. 4×(260/650) is how many quarts of water.

Too much water, 5050 calls for 4 quarts of water, 5 quarts of spawn

You take the weight of your coir.
Let`s say you got a brick of 500gr.
Multiply x5 to get the water content you need, so 2,5 litres of water.
For each quart verm you add, you need 0,5 litres of water more
There are different brands of coir out there, you have to try.
Perhaps a bit more or less water to get to field capacity  :cookiemonster:

Huh?! Just use a little math to keep the same ratio as the 5050 tek. Its tried and true, everyone uses it from the noobs to the pros.

For you Penvious that would be:
250g coir
1.54 quarts water
.77 quarts verm
2 quarts spawn

Is the formula constant when using "brick" versus using  "loose" coir? Is there more or less water present in loose coir or are they the same?

Loose coir has some water content. If you're using loose coir you can't really use a formula because you don't know how much water is in there to begin with. You're better off with bricks because pasteurizing is so much easier but if you're using loose, put it in the oven at the lowest setting, usually 170, for 4 hours. Then hydrate to field capacity. Try to keep it on the dry side, if it gets too wet add dry vermiculite to balance it back out. Verm doesn't need to be pasteurized.

OK, Thank you.  Pasteurize before adding water, I wouldn't have thought of that.
I'm ready to put spawn to bulk this week, armed only with loose coir for ccvg substrate and no prior experience.  Concepts are understood but I can't find tek specifically using loose coir.  Specifically, does using loose coir change the amount of water I should use?
To date I have done LC to LC transfers and  successful inoculations of home made rye grain but this is my first bulk spawn.

I really appreciate your help and I want to be clear I am grasping what you are saying.  I do understand what you mean by field capacity. Also, I have purchased a "pro" substrate from a good source so that when i make my own I can compare relative field capacities.
The loose coir I have on hand (and after all maybe I'll just get a brick) contains more water than the brick. Are you saying I should pasteurize the loose coir straight out of the bag by itself without adding water and afterward  add vermiculite, which doesn't need to be pasteurized, and then bring it to field capacity?

You should add water before you pasteurize but it will evaporate in the oven so you'll probably need to add more. You don't need to add verm, that's just if you make a mistake and add too much water. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself "is this dry enough" instead of "is this wet enough"

People do use coir straight out of the bag, you don't absolutely have to pasteurize it. If your spawn is clean you should be fine

Thanks. That makes sense.  I was really surprised to see how dry the pro mix I had was.  I appreciate the advice.
