If using coco coir that has been pasteurised, should I repasturise it with boiling water?

Hello,

I have some coco coir that I pasturised about 4 days ago and had a lot left over and it has been sitting in a cooler since. I am wondering if I were to use it should I just rehydrate it with distilled water or use boiling water again and wait a while?

Thats all, thanks!

It will be fine, I've used a week old bucket tek mix (lid was snapped on ofc) don't want loads of dust accumulated in there ha.
It should still be at field capacity no need to add more water.

You don't pasteurize by dumping hot water on coir, you are hydrating it with hot water.

Check your coir. If it is still at proper field capacity, use it. If it is too dry, keep adding water until it reaches field capacity. If you make it too wet, mix in dry verm until you reach field capacity. If you don't have verm you can squeeze out the excess.

Pasteurization means you would keep the substrate between 140°F + 160°F for 60-90 min (90 max).
Coir doesn't need to be pasteurized, so if you are going to the trouble of that I wouldn't bother. You would only want to pasteurize it if you are using additional  substrates that require a proper pasteurization like coffee, manure etc..
Pasteurization kills the bad bacteria (which die off at lower temps) while keeping the beneficial bacteria (that can survive the higher temps) which can help protect against contamination alive.

Coir just needs to be heat treated. Boiling water in a bucket does fine. You could prep coir with cold water and it wouldn't contam as long as you had clean spawn, but the heat treatment makes it easier for the mycelium to break it down.

By using boiling water, you are going well above pasteurization temps and partially sterilizing it.

You don't need to use distilled water, tap water is fine..

If you're concerned you could throw it in large enough dish and bake it covered (so it doesn't lose all its moisture) in the oven at lowest temp (175 - 200) for an hour or so.  Then let cool and check hydration before spawning.
I use the oven all the time.  I hydrate to field capacity first with warm water, then cover it and lightly bake it.  I found its the method with the least steps and clean-up, for me anyways.  And I have extrememly low contam rates.

Thanks for the help!

I ended up mixing in some more water cause it was kind of dry.

Next time I pasturize I will do it that way. Thanks!
