Questions about psilocybe subaeruginosa
    #26788888 - 06/28/20 04:37 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

1. Is this mold in the stipe?

2. Subs usually have a gap around the stipe, like this:

But other ones I've seen don't have a gap around the stipe:

Is that normal?

3. How do you know if a sub is too old to consume?

4. How much less potent are older subs?

5. What's the lifespan of subs before they decay?

1. First picture does look like there's some mould in there.

2. They're usually attached but they can tear away from the stem like in your picture. That's fairly normal.

3. Treat them like you would any other edible mushroom. If they've been eaten by bugs too much or are rotting them it's best not to eat them. You can also cut away any bad parts and still use the good pieces left.

4. No more and no less usually. Genetics can play a re large part in potency, not necessarily size.

5. Can be around a week or so. Weather and environmental factors do come into play with this. Rain will rot them faster. Frost will cause them to get frostbite and rot.

Cheers. Also one other thing I forgot to ask. Do you know what causes yellow discoloration like this?

Usually the stem is cream coloured. This made it a bit confusing and made them look a bit like galerinas, especially when the gills have yellow on them. But based on other factors such as blue bruising, a firm/hollow stem, and hygrophanous cap, I don't think they are

For instance, these are apparently galerinas, but one ones on the bottom row have blue bruising (are they psilocybes)?

The picture you posted are Psilocybe. Definitely not Galerina's.

They can get that mustard yellow in the stems. Usually as they become more mature. Genetics, environment and age play a part in this.
