Question: Mechanism of fruiting body formation
    #26791082 - 06/28/20 10:49 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi, all!

If anyone has any knowledge on this subject, please let me know! Clearly mycelium has a way of detecting water and nutrient location and directs itself based on this. One such direction that the mycelium can go is up. I have seen mycelium stray off of substrate  towards a piece of wet vermiculite with amazing accuracy despite being nearly a centimeter away- making a straight line through the air  in its exact direction. I feel like I have heard that mushroom collectors tend to have luck finding specimens after a thick fog. Is the mycelium being pulled out of the ground towards the fog where it is actually more moist than its surroundings? Reason would have it that mycelium would have done this many times over the course of evolution and where better to form a structure where you could spread your spores?

Is this how it works? I don’t quite know the key words to use in the search engine...

Interesting thought! I don't know either, but that's very curious about the mushroom which grew toward the vermiculite. It made me wonder... has anybody ever tried growing mushrooms in zero or microgravity and what could that tell us about the nature of our fungal friends and how they respond to a novel (or regular) environment. I ran across this document, in itself a very interesting newsletter that focusses on fungi, and they analysed the growth of mushrooms in zero gravity.

This relates to your postulation indirectly - they hypothesise that the mushrooms had an "organelle" that sensed the direction of gravity, but I wonder if it's more a matter of an organelle (or other mechanism) which sense the direction of light and nutrients (not gravity) and begins to grow toward them.

Curiouser and curioser.
