Appears to be Meripilus Sumstinei aka black staining polypore.

I don't quite think so. I found a huge patch of those yesterday as well, and it was not Meripilus. Those have a firm rubbery texture, and Meripilus have a softer grainy texture that shreds like cooked chicken. I would like to know what they are and if they're edible though.
Here are my Meripilus finds for a week or so back. Notice the differences?

Those first ones might be Bondarzewia berkeleyi "Berkeley polypore"

That's definitely meripilus sumstinei. Look closely and you can see small areas of black staining. Not all of them turn black immediately or when growing.

It just seems off to me, like that one that I found yesterday. It looked exactly like his finds, and the texture was all wrong, so tough that I could barely tear a piece off. meripilus has a soft texture that shreds. Well, maybe we can get to the bottom of this mystery eventually.

Young specimens do tear easily, infact the young ones are the ones you want because they are alot more tender. You likely got an older one that's stopped growing. The photos OP posted are pretty well textbook examples of a prime meripilus.

Cool then and yes, I always find them when they are pretty old and past their prime. I have yet to find any fresh samples yet. Damn, I gotta get back out and check on that big patch that I passed up now

OP's image seems to be bruising black in places, is this something that happens to Bondarzewia berkeleyi? I'm very curious about hen of the woods lookalikes, I haven't heard of that until now.

I didn't catch the black bruising, that changes my identification to Meripilus.

Oh how wrong I was. I went back out,and look at this! Some were way past their prime, but I brought a couple back for the table. By the time I got home, the black bruising was purely evident all over. You MentalPariah, are the man

It happens to the best of us, I totally missed the blackish bruising and that's a tell tale characteristic.
