I couldn’t boil prep oats to save my life
    #26789685 - 06/28/20 12:17 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I’ve tried Crackatoa’s and bods oat prep multiple times and even tried a couple hybrid methods where I boil for a little while and let the pot sit with hot water till I have a couple burst grain. With boil prep methods I always get too many burst grain which spreads sticky starch all over the other grains or the centers are under hydrated, THERE IS NO IN BETWEEN. I like the idea of boil prep, quickly hydrate the grain while keeping endospore count to a minimum, but for the life of me I just cannot get it dialed in.

Is there anything I could be doing wrong? Could these oats just have hulls too weak for boiling? They’re producers pride if that matters.

If I can’t get it figured out by tonight I’m just gonna try a soak prep in the fridge and see how that goes. Made my first lc a couple days ago and I wanna test it out on some proper grains dammit  :witch:

For oats with hulls intact:  boil water, wait for rolling boil, dump grains in for seven mins; after seven minutes take out immediately and strain... just did it last week... perfect!

I guess for this next gallon I’ll try innocuoles method so I can at least have something on the back burner just in case. I think my problem has to do with too much heat so a quick boil with a couple hour soak might be a good middle ground for these fuckin things lol.

I’ve got more than 100 pounds of this producers pride left and I’ve been hearing lately how a lot of people haven’t been able to  get this brand to work, say it almost always turns out bacterial. God I just want the shit I have to work :angrycat:

 god damnit. Glad you mentioned that because the bag I just got is producers pride.

Was confused as hell because everything seemed to be clean until I spawned it. At least my ducks'll eat it

Yeah idk anything about it specifically but I think I remember pasty mentioning something about farmers using increasingly more bacterial pesticides or something like that.

All I know is I’m gonna do more research on where I get my grains from now on lol

Edit: apparently pasty was referring to organic grains. Bacteria are used as an alternative to pesticides
